Nikki Kule

When Preston and I started thinking about KIC, we knew we wanted to profile women–our friends, who have not only have great style, but also lead rich, interesting lives. Nikki Kule, mother and talented children’s clothing designer, has got it all in spades. (I met Nikki a few years ago through a mutual friend when she had her own children’s clothing line, Kule, which sadly is no more.)

Nikki and good friend Michael Kors in Capri

Tall, lanky, sooooo nice and laid back, tomboyish, bohemian Upper East Side mother of two, Nikki could care less about trends and she is not one to pile stuff on. Which means when she is wearing her old army green Michael Kors jacket (Michael is, naturally, her major designer of choice) and Marc by Marc Jacobs red jeans with a Michael Kors lucite cuff from this spring (see first pic), she makes basic look anything but. She makes me want to exacto knife my wardrobe down to its bare bones.

Great news is she is about to unleash her exacting eye with the launch of Brooks Brothers kids. They must love her a lot over there at BB, because this July they are launching a separate 48 page catalog and free-standing children’s stores are in the works. (Sorry no sneak previews–but we will let you know when it is out.)

Nikki’s living room

I spent the morning at her apartment (eclectic and elegant) chatting about various topics.

What is your favorite style period? The 70′s because it’s my childhood and I have fond memories of wearing Lacoste, Fila, Merona Sport, and Fiorucci jeans.

Women whose style inspires you. My mom because when she finds something she likes she buys in multiples. Right now I am into Alexa Chung. She really can rock the nautical preppy tomboy look like no one else.

Nikki’s neutral accessories

You can never have too many….Striped t-shirts.

Style mantra: Never leave the house in sweatpants. You never know when you’re going to run into George Clooney.

Some of Nikki’s t-shirts

I don’t get….Platform 5″ heels.

My favorite color combo right now is…. Red and olive green because they are unexpected.

On my bed stand: The Raw Food Diet and back issues of WWD.

Jewelry:  Ethnic and tribal pieces because I really love raw materials like leather, horn, and wood. I don’t like costume jewelry.

Nikki’s collection of ethic jewelry includes pieces from her mom

I can’t get through a day without….a piece of chocolate.

A week without….a run in Central Park.

A month without…..Being with my friends Lance [ LePere]  and Michael [Kors]. I can get serious withdrawal not seeing them.

Nikki loves a good tote

Children’s clothes should………not be black.

Being a mom means…….having a child in my bed every night.

A perfect day is……..today!

Have the pictures (top photo) been deliberately tilted so that they will correspond to her posture?

  7. Nikki Kule is so chic and very beautiful. I look forward to her line for Brooks Brothers. I do disagree, however, that children should not wear black . The child is the priority, the clothing secondary and nothing frames a child’s beautiful features like black or similarly dark colors.
I am so enjoying the site.
