Kate and I go way back. We met at Vogue where we had neighboring offices and became good friends.  Kate is one of the smartest and most forthright women I know and I look forward to reading her new book Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style (Clarkson Otter).

KiC caught up with Kate and asked her these 3 questions-

1. What do you think is the take-away message from Michelle Obama’s love of fashion?

Be confident, wear what you love and what makes you feel good. Her best accessory–one that certainly will never go out of style–is her confidence. Every woman wants that, every season.

2. How do you balance work and family life?

I don’t! I mean, I try, but it’s very difficult. Whenever I look at my schedule I am thinking when can I carve out time for my kids? Weekends are sacred, and I only go out twice a week night as a rule. I also try to see my working life in cycles: I’ll work really hard for several years– you know, going into an office, traveling non-stop– and then I’ll freelance and be at home for a year. My mother was there for me 150% of the time and it made all the difference in my life.

3. What are your 3 cannot-live-without fashion items right now?

My fur-trimmed Miu Miu coat. This weather is killing me! A pair of Tod’s boots I got two years ago that I absolutely love. And my Chanel jacket. It’s black, pretty simple, but it can be worn at night as a tuxedo kind of thing or during the day over a pretty blouse. Oh, and did I mention J.Crew? I’ve been doing a lot of TV lately for my book and I have a few of these beautiful silk blouses from J.Crew in colors like pearl grey, periwinkle, peach. They are a great staple.

Thx Kate!!

  1. How about a fashion, style story about Ann Coulter or do we not speak of the conservative woman’s ability to be fashionable?? No wonder you had a job at Vogue!
