Run-around Chic

Jessica Biel

How to be chic and warm has been the challenge this past week. I admit that I am still intrigued by the cape– I took a pass on it when it was all-the-rage two years ago, and honestly, I’m still not sure. Wearing a cape with a cross-body bag works, but the exposed arms still stop me from going there.

I need a pair of run-around boots, short with a chunky heel is the way to go.

These in white with fringe are good, although not the most practical purchase perhaps.

The Givenchy Pandora is my new obsession. The duffle is the It bag right now, but like a Birkin, I hate that it’s always in my hand. The Pandora has been around for a few seasons so I know it has staying power. And it’s incredibly functional, especially the pocket on the front for my wallet and keys. No more digging in a deep, dark cavern for essentials (which are always at the bottom). And the cross-body strap is an added bonus, I use it all the time. I prefer the calfskin which looks a little more polished than the washed shearling above.

  1. Agree completely about the cross body and the cape. It’s the same issue with the poncho. It’s just odd.

  2. The Pandora is my obsession as well. It is such a well made bag for running around and the only cross body bag that looks decent. I have the medium and large….and in my opinion, the medium is THE perfect size. I’m looking for a pair of run around booties as well…the Rag & Bone Newbury was a tad too high.

  3. I adore the cape and I have just been given my Australian Grandmother’s long cape which was bought in England and is black with reversable check and I have loved it since a child. I think its tres chic! As a Mother of four I love the Cross Body bag too for all its practicalities but would not where them together….too busy.

  5. I always thought my style was too uptown for a pair of moto boots, but I bought a pair anyway and found that they’re the most versatile boots I own. Besides being amazingly comfortable, they work with anyway from a cashmere sweater to shearling coat.

  6. I have bought and returned two capes. I love the look, but there is a certain awkwardness I can’t quite get past – probably because my cross-body bags are non- negotiable. Please let us know if you find the perfect running-around boots!

  7. I am curious about a cape, but have never gone there. I do like the looks of some this past season and am thinking about getting one. They go in and out fashion wise, but the lines are pretty basic. If you buy one, one will be all you ever need. Scale is also key as a petite person.

  9. I bought it online at Barneys. I got the ‘textured calfskin’, they have a smoother calfskin, but the hardware is silver, and I prefer gold.

  10. I absolutely don’t like capes, they are voluminous and make a girl’s body look bigger and shapeless. My run around boots for this season came from Fratelli Rossetti. Perfectly pointy and conveniently low heeled. Good luck with your bag choice.

  11. Love pandora for errands, school runs, etc. Rag and bone booties seem a tad high, but they are so comfortable, I don’t care.
What is everyone thinking for a summer run around bag? I love the tan Antigona, but it feels too structured for relaxed summer clothes.

    Love this blog!

  12. I have always loved the Pandora, but wanted something a bit more polished, so I bought the Celine Edge. It doesn’t have a crossbody strap, but the shoulder strap is more than comfortable. Acne’s Pistol booties are great run around boots – very comfortable.

  13. Perhaps wear a leather jacket under the cape? That might help with the exposed arms situation (plus, I think it will look cool!)

  14. Ha! Those white boots look like a version of the Go-Go boots that were popular in the ’60′s!

I have a navy cashmere cape that I wear in lieu of a sweater. Love it.

  15. The Givenchy Antigona bag has handles and a shoulder strap, which make it my go-to right now. Givenchy bags are really having a moment in the sun right now, and I love them!! The new Lucrezia is also speaking to me. . .

  16. I got a Givenchy Tinhan shopper this year and love it. It is less structured that the Antigona and Pandora. I love the side zippers and also the fact that it seems pretty uncommon-I havent seen another.

  17. Preston-any good photos or ideas for those of us who (unfortunately for us) have to wear skirts for work during the winter? Other than high boots its almost impossible to “Keep It Chic” in below freezing weather with a skirt!!!

  19. Agree, about the IM dicker boots. I’ve tried them all, and these are the perfect heel height, and they don’t weigh a ton.

  20. Now that the snow’s gone, I’ve been wearing my Acne Pistol boots again. Though yesterday I did break out a pair of black suede, fringed wedge Muks!
