The Red Smile by Alex Katz 1963

Top of my to-do list was to see “Alex Katz: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art” at the Nassau County Museum. This small, but mighty, solo show includes early landscapes, collages, and a number of the enormous portraits featuring the artist’s friends and family. The paintings of Ada, Katz’s wife and muse above, are my favorites in this must-see exhibition.

To complete my outing, I popped into Diane’s Bakery Café for lunch. Just down the hill from the museum, Diane’s is without a doubt my favorite lunch spot on the North Shore of Long Island.

  • Oh, the perfect season for a Katz exhibit!

    MFA-Boston had a great one last summer, and their shop sold CD’s of music he painted to including Stan Getz’s classic bossa nova sax.
