You can never have too many

Grey tops

When something works, I wear it often– on my short list of things that I reach for all year round is a grey top.  Whether it’s a sweater, sweatshirt, or T, I never seem to tire of this cozy wardrobe staple. A grey top goes with almost anything and its simple and laid-back vibe makes it one of my perennial style favorites.

Clockwise from the top: A.P.C. sweatshirt, Helmut Lang sweater, Alexander Wang T, Equipment cashmere sweater, Vanessa Bruno alpaca sweater.

  • I was beginning to worry I had too many grey tops. Apparently not! I also add short sleeve and sleeveless tops to my grey collection (it’s so hot here).

  • I agree. Don’t forget Banjo & Matilda sloppy jojo sweater which I got in gray after you recommended! Comfort dressing! But not sloppy!
Ps just ordered Vanessa Bruno grey sweater. It looks perfect. Thank you for finding it!

  • I hand down clothes to my best friend and her daughters. We were all at the beach a few weeks ago and when it cooled down at night we adjourned to the porch for an evening chat. We all started to laugh as we each appeared with one of my gray sweatshirts on. The girls are 13 & 15 and they are already converts!!

  • I too begun to think something was wrong with me as I buy at least a couple of grey tops each season. But they are so versatile. They just go with everything! I don’t think you can have one too many!

  • At least I can say I am not alone on the grey top uniform….Ironically enough, my twenty year old neice asked me if the grey tee or white shirt/ jeans or white jeans/ballet flats or loafers was the “uniform for forty year old women.”

  • We’re both blondes, Preston….and you always look beautiful…but I have always worried that I would look washed out…any hints ? Perhaps a charcoal gray? I just love the color and it truly feels “homey”!!!

  • Hi

It made me smile… I thought I was the only one with a grey sweater obsession!
Thank you for your blog, it is such an inspiration…..

  • I have too many gray tops to count! But they go perfectly with everything all year round. I may have to add the APC or Equipment top to my collection.

  • I love the look on almost everyone but me. I’ve tried and tried–buying tops in every shade of gray available–but they just don’t look good with my coloring. A very savvy fashion pro friend finally said to me, “Throw away every damned gray top you own–you need to be in black, white, blue or pink.” And she was right. And someone got very lucky at my local Goodwill store.

  • I’m with you. I have a closet full of grey tops and I’m always on the lookout for more. I love the Equipment sweater here – it’s simple and perfect.

  • I am loving the Theory sweatshirt that you suggested. I have also been told to stay away from grey with my coloring but have ignored it. Is there a rule I’m missing? Thanks!

  • Finally a photo of E. Alt that is inspiring!
Mind you, I’m not going to chop off my skirt but I’m going to play with my over-the-knee boots until I get a look I can pull off.
It’s so fun to see her in something other than skinny pants, black shoes and a simple blouse.
    More, more!
    Also, love grey!
