Coat Dilemma

Fall Coats

Coats are being delivered to stores at a furious pace and there’s an abundance of great options this season. I need a new coat/jacket, so I’m going to be thoughtful and proactive about what I want to avoid a late fall (when I will actually be wearing it) scramble.

Above are the four styles I am considering. I already have a number of duffel coats, but the Saint Laurent, especially since it is grey, would be great. However, I bought, and still love, a grey Miu Miu coat two seasons ago. A fur, although gorgeous, feels limited. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect peacoat for years and there are many good ones this fall. But in the end, I’m leaning toward a shearling, much like the Isabel Marant in the upper left.

I will let you know.

Isabel Marant shearling, Isabel Marant fur, Saint Laurent duffel, Saint Laurent peacoat.

  • Great choices for a classic coat.

I think everyone’s wardrobe needs a classic coat that is an investment not a statement – quality fabric, timeless styling in a neutral tone.

Last year I purchased a navy Margaret Howell Duffel and know it will be a key go to piece for many years to come.

I am loving the idea of a fun fur gilet, recently I have this picture in my mind of a crisp white shirt or long sleeve grey t shirt, white jeans and a fur gilet- perfect for the transitional weeks ahead.

  • Perfect group to choose from, and I especially like your thought process, taking into account what you already have (and more importantly, wear). Time and time again I try on a fur gilet because in my mind I see St. Laurent, but then the mirror shows me (large chest) something akin to Maurice Sendak. I do regret not buying a shearling coat I tried on last year because it was remarkably flattering, but I was distracted by something else. Shearling is sporty but easily taken to other moods and places by virtue of its louche beauty.

  • Always smart to be proactive about fall shopping. Definitely go for the Isabel Marant. It’s perfectly versatile.

  • I am loving all the shearling options out there – I have my eye on the Marc by Marc Jacobs one in the smoky quartz color!

  • I hope you get the shearling! You don’t have one yet, so might as well get it this season. And when you get it, please share a photo. Would love to see how you style it!

  • I vote the shearling. Invested in a shearling Acne moto jacket last year – warmest winter coat EVER!
