Duffel Love

Derek Lam

Last week I posted on my favorite coats on offer for fall and concluded that a duffel would be my top choice. Either of these would be a great addition to my wardrobe. Although, I may wait for the Saint Laurent in grey.

  • wait for the saint laurent in gray. i have the exact same version, rope/wood closure, but in tan camel/alpaca from ralph lauren. it’s my go to winter coat and it’s so warm i can get away with just a long sleeve shirt and scarf underneath. the top derek lam doesn’t look as rich to me…i imagine the coat itself is cashmere, but there’s something about that sheen that i’m not feeling.

  • I prefer the Derek Lam coat. Very classic American sportswear. I think Lam was probably inspired by Bonnie Cashin and Claire McCardell– both their archives have coats similar to the camel duffel shown here.

When I saw runway pictures of this Derek Lam coat I screamed with pleasure–it just seemed so right and perfect.

  • The gray Saint Laurent may be the better choice, especially with your blonde coloring. Then again, having options is a good thing, so I usually find a way to get things in several colors if I can! The camel duffel is a classic that will go along way…it is difficult to decide.

  • I still have my high school (1956) toggle coat .. we lived in Wiesbaden, Germany, my father was U. S. Air Force .. my coat came from Heudorf & Steinle a Wiesbaden department

store. It is black wool with a hood and plaid wool lining. Only thing is, it is quite

warm for So. Calif. .. but maybe I’ll wear it on a cool day anyway.

Almost bought it in off-white .. good thing I didn’t do that, it never would have lasted

    this long!

  • I have a black wool duffle…the only problem is it shows EVERYTHING, so I have to use a lint brush constantly…but I love it.

For some reason, I am leaning toward the Derek Lam version…it’s clean and crisp and just a touch modernized, but still quite traditional. I love the slight a-line shape.

  • Try Gloverall’s slim cut version for a well made, traditional but inexpensive duffel coat.
