Will You Wear Mules?

Mules are back, and in a big way. Like Carine Roitfeld, I vividly remember the annoying whap-whap-whap sound they made as someone walked down the halls of Vogue. But according to an article by Meenal Mistry in the WSJ on the resurgence of the backless slip-on, even Carine has come around and now likes them. I like them too, especially with the higher heel. And Meenal gives good advice on how to wear them today– paired with a longer skirt or cropped slim pants is best.

  • Oh yes – love them! Would love to hear (and see) more on longer skirts. Vanessa Traina’s whole look is stunning.

  • these “mules” are totally doable; they’re more like “backless shoes”. more fancy clog (barely any whap, whap whap) than dr scholl’s (clackety, whap, whap went those manolo pointy, princess kitten heels, ugh, remember?). i say, yes to this incarnation.

  • Absolutely!

  • Absolutely, I still have some vintage from the last time around that I will resurrect.

  • We are loving mules this Resort Season! There is something so effortless and chic about a classic mule

  • Oh, I so wish I could wear them, especially the ones with the higher vamp, but I can’t. My heel always (!) slides to the left or right off the shoe and then I cramp up trying to keep them on. I shall adore from afar.

  • Yes!

  • I like them open toed; otherwise, I think they look a little clunky and make feet look larger. The open toe seems more feminine.

  • Looks chic on others but not my look.

  • Oh yes, especially with cropped slim trousers….I would put up with the whap, whap, whap for the understated elegant factor any day!

  • I guess I am the lone dissenter. I really dislike mules…especially trying to keep them on going downstairs!

  • I like them on others, but I also find them hard to wear. Weather permitting, I love to wear dresses or skirts and I think they look nice with mules. Maybe I will have to “teach” myself how to keep them on my feet!

  • I like these new ones, because they look fresh and look like a shoe not a flip flop with a heel. I guess the thing that gets me with mules is they seem to get over done as a look. A few years ago my sister’s son was getting married and she was wearing a cocktail length dress and was looking at shoes. She asked me what I thought of a pair of mules and I told her I really think the look wasn’t elegant enough for the mother of the groom. She ended up with a conventional heel, which I thought did greater justice to the lovely dress she was wearing. I guess I just can’t get beyond those ’80’s “Grease” style mules with capri pants – not a classy look to me. The closed toe mules shown here are different though, and I can see them paired with an elegant outfit. Vanessa Traina’s cream outfit is the essence of elegance to me. One of my favorite looks.

  • I won’t be jumping on that bandwagon. Very hard to be elegant when your shoes are making that slapping noise!

  • I think April nailed it… I LOVED Grease, but not those slutty mules with the spandex pants! And not those modern-guise ones either. So sorry Phoebe Philo et al, but I’m out…

  • without question! love mules – comfortable and sexy!
