On My Mind

Three Things I Need

The upside of a freshly edited closet is that it’s easy to take stock of what I have and, surprisingly, don’t have. Honestly, I thought I had a lot more. I’d been storing pieces that were so old, unfashionable, or didn’t even fit, it only appeared that I had loads of things to wear.

There are some striking holes in my wardrobe. How is it that I don’t have a good black dress? Or a belt besides the ones I buy at the tack shop? A spring jacket? No wonder I always talk about a uniform and tight rotation—I’m reaching for the same few items day after day.

Jacket, Dress, Belt.

  • I love a fresh edit and now do it every season. Initially I had no choice. I moved into a new space with a much smaller closet. I was not very happy with the size but it had a great upside. I could only put the current season in it and had to store the rest. Now I only store what is in good condition, current and wearable for next year. It really keeps my wardrobe fresh. So far I have not fallen back into that denim and t-shirt rut (it was huge) so that feels great, too.

  • Hi Preston,
Who makes that belt? I seem to be having issues with the link. Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,

  • Hi Julie Ann,

The belt is Saint Laurent and I changed the link.

  • I love the Toteme dress. I bought it two weeks ago -just in time before your post probably sold it out!

When editing a clients closet I ask them, “would you buy this right now?”. I believe they (and I( need to love every piece!

    Thanks Preston.

  • Inspired by your edit to finally tackle my own. I have some Marni, Max Mara, Gucci that I never wear. Recommendations on where to rehome these pieces? What do you recommend? Donate to Dress for Success? Housing Works? Somehow it makes it easier to edit knowing that my purged clothing may find another happy home. Thanks!

  • Martha,
I gave a Chanel and 2 Dolce & Gabbana skirts to my sister. Everything else went to a clothing box. Love the idea of donating to Dress for Success and Housing Works, I’m sure they would appreciate your pieces.

  • I did this last year, and it helped me so much. Need to edit it further now. Will be interested to see the black dress you end up with.

  • As always, your choices are perfection ! I absolutely love the Totême dress, and the belt can change an entire look by its elegance !
