On My Mind

Fall Forward

This summer was a 7 out of 10. Not terrible, but not spectacular, either. The intense heat took a bit of the wind out of my sails. The good news is that I’m looking forward to fall.

In our house, Labor Day is like New Year’s since school starts the following day. And the start of school is the real beginning of a new year. We’ve bought notebooks and Adidas and pulled out uniform skirts—the final countdown has begun.

I love these early fall weeks as we transition into cooler weather. Like the photo above, a sweater and sandals, a summer holdover, is my favorite way to dress. Fisherman knits are back at the tippy top of my list and I’m sure I’ll be posting on them often. Peacoats, too.

  • Love everything about this look and vibe. September always has an air of nostalgia about it.

  • Great photo. Please do keep posting about fisherman knits. I’m still looking for the perfect one!

  • Sadly, no signs of fall yet in LA. It’s been the hottest summer, and I’m looking forward to wearing ankle boots and a peacoat again. I love the look above, but it would never work here.

  • I’m in LA too. We have a few more weeks of heat left, but I did sneak in a lightweight pullover and some ankle boots yesterday during a cooler spell. 🙂 I’m still looking for a fisherman-style sweater that’s a bit lighter for our more temperate winter.

  • Does anyone but me think the sandals with the pea coat look strange?

    CariSeptember 5th, 2015  3:15 PM

  • No I love sandles with trench coats, pea costs & sweaters. My favourite look.

Can’t wait for fall, still very warm here in Toronto.

  • Hi,
I hope you had a nice summer! Who makes a pea coat for short women like me, 5′ 2″? I have been looking for a good one for a few years and something that will last, not a cheapy!
    Let’s have lunch ??

    LisaSeptember 6th, 2015  5:43 AM

  • Who designed the sandals?

    MichelleSeptember 6th, 2015  5:49 AM

  • I cannot stand summer so as soon as Easter arrives I begin to panic! Happily the warm weather is well and truly on the way out in most of France and not a moment too soon. I really love this look and the sandals are amazing! Looking forward to your post on peacoats as I’m desperate for a new one. Mine is from the army and navy store on Canal Street as its really hard to find an authentic one. The one in this photo is perfect.

  • I love the sweater with sandal look. I am also in L.A. and look for the lightweight fisherman’s.
Fall can be a bit hot here so this combo it perfect!

  • Preston, I live in Northern California and am looking for a fisherman/cable knit sweater that is a cardigan. Not too heavy. It needs to be on the longer side because I am tall. Maybe one with the pretty horn buttons? I have been on the hunt for a few years now and have not found one that fits me.
    Your blog is amazing!

I think the sandals and pea coat look strange. You could wear them but why, when loafers or boots would be so much better!

    Paula BSeptember 6th, 2015  3:18 PM

  • Cari and Paula, as much as I love those sandals, I agree with you on the look. If it wasn’t for the peacoat, it would be fine. Here in Chicago, if the weather is suitable for the coat and sweater, your feet would be rather chilly.

    kimSeptember 7th, 2015  10:32 AM

  • I have to agree with Cari and Kim. I think I you could retain the vibe with either the pea coat OR the fisherman knit, but worn together with the slides are a little silly and throw the balance off. Socks and Berks could work though. At the point you’re throwing on the coat over your shirt and sweater, your feet have got to be chilly! But I do love the mid-weight clothing and even the slides with just the pea coat because it’s believable – there’s a chill in the air and you reached for whatever was hanging near the door- that feel I love.
