Monday Must-Have

With the holidays, and my daughters’ upcoming birthdays on December 23rd and 27th (I know, I failed family planning), I haven’t given much thought to must-haves beyond gifts.

Yet, while working at a Christmas fair I was inspired to revisit the Apple Watch. In September I posted on wanting one from the Hermès collaboration—was invited to Hermès to try some on—then never heard a peep and promptly forgot about it. But, last week I spied a friend wearing one and she raved about it. What really surprised me was that this is a woman I would never imagine wearing a piece of technology on her wrist, let alone herald the watch’s usefulness. Needless to say, I was sold.

After I called my contact at Hermès–who left me a message saying they are having stock issues (or, more likely, I’m just really far down on the list)–I popped into the Apple store on Madison at 74th and bought the watch right then and there.

In the end, I went with a Double Tour with the longer strap (can only be ordered through the store)—it suits me. My friend has the basic Apple Watch below and put on her own strap. Now, that’s chic.

  • I’ve been considering this for months, too. What makes it so “useful”?

  • Don’t get me started. I can’t see the time on my Cartier watch without reading glasses. So, even if I’m wearing it, I grab my phone for the time. The tutorials on are what swayed me. That said, I doubt I’d wear it every day, but I don’t wear any watch every day.

  • I too, had my eye on the Hermes Apple watch. Kudos to my husband for filing the knowledge away until my birthday a couple of weeks ago. He also had trouble finding the Hermes one and purchased the plain band (no stitching) model similar to the single band Hermes and as pictured above. I am not sure it is a game changer in terms of function but it is nice to glance at my wrist instead of being buried in my phone.

  • I like the Single Tour on this watch more than the Double. But, like Lisa, I’m very curious why it’s so useful, other than in a place where you can’t have your phone out? I love the way it looks, but I don’t like that my phone has to be right near it. So please tell us…..

  • Sorry to rain on the apple watch parade, but I have been tremendously underwhelmed by it. I received it as a gift over the summer, wore it for a few months, but never found it particularly useful. Once the novelty wore off, I took it off and never used it again. I ended up giving my apple watch to my mother. I don’t think she is in love with it either.

  • I am not a technical person at all and it was Hermes trademark that swayed me in the direction of the watch, which I got in the double tour variety (since, in my mind, this is what makes it uniquely Hermes :)). That said, I was surprised to discover what a useful this turned out to be! To begin with, like many smart phone users, I had all but given up on wearing a watch and have now rediscovered the pleasure of having a time piece on my wrist. Next, the watch is multifunctional and is, indeed, great for phone calls and messages receipt in loud places that would drown out the phone; has a convenient Apple pay function (hello, Trader Joe’s and Starbucks!); offers daily/weekly activity monitoring info and provides reminders to those of us with sedentary jobs. A word of warning: to fully appreciate this gadget and go beyond a fashion item (it is, by the way, a fun conversation piece), you have to actually read the manual and watch the tutorial. I am not big on tutorials, but you will get so much more out of the new gadget if you take the time to watch it. And no, I do not work for either Apple or Hermes!

  • Admittedly, I am not terribly impressed with technology of any kind. Add to this, it feels positively excessive to wear this sort of trend, especially when everyone in the world knows the price tag. Perhaps if I were a woman who needed to be connected at all times, I could better appreciate this. But even my 25 year old daughter and 28 year old son wince at this watch. All this being said, I love and honor the free market!

  • It took me a while to fully appreciate my Apple watch, but now I cannot live without it!! The Hermes collaboration sealed the style deal for me, but its functionality is truly awesome. It is great to feel less wed to your phone (as your watch will give you a tap if you are receiving a phone call or text– you can set it up to give you alerts when you want). And it is also a fitness tracker (no need for a FitBit or pedometer), AND a watch of course. Many apps can be viewed on the watch, but I mostly love it because I’m not constantly looking at my phone. You only pick up your phone when you NEED it; you’re not constantly checking it for the time, to see if you got a text, etc., and then getting lost in the million things your phone can do.

The Apple watch is a game changer, and the Hermes collaboration makes it look like something much more beautiful than another piece of technology.

  • Thanks to Irina’s comment, I returned the Single Tour for a Double Tour, it is more Hermès. They’ve just released it (yesterday in fact) with a longer strap, which you can only order through the store.

  • Preston…I was on the fence too. My husband just surprised me early (he never can wait until Christmas and likes for us to exchange before the 25th so we enjoy it and can enjoy the boys on Christmas morning). So this has become our tradition. He was no where near an Apple store that sold the Hermes version, but found someone to go and buy the double strap in CA on Monday and I got it tonight. He really got me on this one. Totally surprised! The boys are all getting Apple watches for Christmas so thankfully they will be able to teach me how to use it! Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Chic 2016!!
