‘The Trench Coats for Fall’

I was on the hunt for a trench last spring, but didn’t find the perfect one. I’m sure it’s in this story from the upcoming WSJ. Magazine’s September issue.

  • I find trench coats very difficult to buy – and as I live in SW Scotland, they are a necessity! That is part of the problem – they need to be functional as well as beautiful. I am tall (5ft10) and very cool toned, so finding the right style and colour is very difficult as most don’t suit me.

There are different weights for Summer and Winter too – so I think even if you’d got one in Spring, you might be looking for another now. And styles and proportions are changing; I actually recently returned a “classic” trench because it suddenly didn’t look quite right. A bit dated.

All the trenches in this story are beautiful. I will no doubt invest in a long, languid trench at some point – there are a lot of long length ones coming in. Meantime, I’ve bought an oversized, minimal white double cotton raincoat from the Max Mara sale which is lovely for now.

Let us know which one you choose please!

  • I’m curious what you’re looking for in a trench? Can you describe?

  • Aquascutum. That’s all I’m saying. I bought mine seven years ago and it is still my perfect trench. They are the kings (not beige/freight but a pale olive – perfection!).

  • Yes, love to know everyone’s thoughts on a good, hard-working trench. I live in Chicago and need one that will keep the dampness out.

  • As I said last time, always go for classic over fashion. Burberry or Aquascutum will never go out of style!!!!!
