How I long to be a hat girl…

Daria in Chanel from August French Vogue
My father–a man who shopped the Brooks Brothers’ sale twice a year for clothes–was uber classic/preppy when it came to dressing, even his blazers were standard navy wool with gold buttons. But in the winter, he always wore the most gorgeous deep navy cashmere coat and a black fedora he had made in London at Lock & Co. Hatters near Saville Row.
I loved him in that hat (which sits in my closet). He looked handsome in it. And it isn’t so bad on me either. Yet I can’t get up the gumption to wear it. Hats are fun and mysterious. And there are some poetic versions out for fall. But I end up feeling self-conscious. (Why is beyond me since some of my other outfits get far more stares than a hat would.)

Maybe I will have to ease into hat wearing. First on morning errands. Then maybe to a lunch……
Of course, there is always hat head to contend with……See, I’m talking myself out of it already!
