Bare is best

Courtesy of Paris Vogue

Recently, I wrote a post Blue polish? which challenged my thinking on nail colors. The spate of women sporting blue and purple toes this summer intrigued me. But when I went for a pre-vineyard pedicure, I couldn’t do it. I am resigned to being a nude, barely there, nail color person.

As I start buying some key fall pieces and am falling in love with black all over again (a big thank you to the September issue of Paris Vogue which is devoted to the goth color), I am loving my colorless nails all the more. I have to admit that the pressure to avoid black as the world was print and color crazed was tough-going.

  • I so agree. I always think the next time I get a pedicure, I will do something daring, but the truth is I just love the look of a polished nude nail. Whats your go-to nude polish color?

  • I just interviewed Aerin Lauder in her office and made note that both her manicure and pedicure were a light pale color. I already switched to pale nails but now I might switch to a pale pedicure as well. But I love Nars Chinatown for a pedicure in winter with paler skin. Looks great with black clothes too!

    AliciaAugust 15th, 2012  9:41 AM

  • love the sandals…please share name of designer! txs.

    susanAugust 15th, 2012  9:47 AM

  • Love nude nails. When I am feeling adverturous I love geranium red but for now I am leaving the blue for my daughters.

    kayce hughesAugust 15th, 2012  9:51 AM

  • I agree with pale nails (both manicure and pedicure) they are classic, you can’t go wrong with them. Love your blog!

  • i love the barely there nail so much that about i year ago i stopped painting my nails altogether -but i didn’t give up the pampering. i hated seeing discolored nails when they’d remove the polish, i felt the polish was ‘suffocating’ my nails. so now i regularly have them buffed to a high patina and i love the natural-polished look!

  • Loved this ! But I also love to change my toe polish to brighten up with some fun summer outfits, fingers too. Any idea who makes that amazing sandal ??? Been looking for it everywhere, just back fro CA…no luck.
Thanks, and I love your STYLE

  • I am with you! I wear nude polish all Summer long and only in the winter will I, maybe, succumb to a very dark purple, red, brown and/ or blue on my toes. I find it tends to drive me crazy if I have to look at it on me for too long.

    Ridgely's RadarAugust 15th, 2012  10:50 AM

  • You had me at the sandals. . .will you share?

    TraciAugust 15th, 2012  11:13 AM

  • I’ll leave the nude to you. I love playing with all the fun colors, on my toes anyway.

    Great sandals!

    ShannonAugust 15th, 2012  11:22 AM

  • Did the blue nail polish on toes…hated it!! Back to barely there!! Classic is always safe bet!! Love those sandals??? who’s are they??

    Allison leesAugust 15th, 2012  12:05 PM

  • Did a cornflower blue on my toes and everytime I looked down- it looked like my toes were black and blue- much better on my hands- still like nude the best!

    stephanie hAugust 15th, 2012  12:29 PM

  • Only those with beautiful feet can do nude and barely there. Those of us with size 11 wide feet need the color to distract the eye from the big foot. By the way, Preston, tell shoe manufacturers that just because we have big feet doesn’t mean we have no fashion sense. I love fabulous shoes too.

    DavidaAugust 15th, 2012  12:48 PM

  • who needs color when you have those sandals? What is the best nude color for fingers that won’t make me look embalmed in the winter?

    kristenAugust 15th, 2012  12:49 PM

  • I can’t seem to part with my Dovima by NARS.

    AnitaAugust 15th, 2012  1:29 PM

  • Love the left sandals! Who’s are they?

    AnaAugust 15th, 2012  2:27 PM

  • Please put those sandals in KIC shop!!!

    parisAugust 15th, 2012  3:10 PM

  • Love the nude color pedicure and love the sandal on the left. Pls do share where to get them. i had a pair like that from Bass years ago. I found something similar but not quite from saks fifth avenue- Ishvara
Ibiza Leather Criss-Cross Sandals, Color is lighter. Should order half to one size down. I still prefer darker color like the one shown on pic. search is still on…..

    divaAugust 15th, 2012  3:15 PM

  • Do you have a polish recommendation? The ones I’ve tried are always too chalky, too sheer, too streaky, etc. Anyone?

    Lilyb. LAugust 15th, 2012  3:18 PM

  • Love the light colour nails. On hands especially.
I use a nude with a little shimmer by Chanel on the toes.
Dark colours age the hand, but I like the drama on the foot.

    Anne KilgourAugust 15th, 2012  3:33 PM

  • Nars Storm Bird – a neutral medium grey is a nice option between pastel blue and nude. Goes GREAT with lightly tanned toes…

    tunieAugust 15th, 2012  4:36 PM

  • Ditto on the source for the sandals pictured please!!

    Janna KohlAugust 15th, 2012  6:06 PM

  • best picture of kate…ever!

    ElleAugust 15th, 2012  8:24 PM

  • I will get the info on the sandals, but they are both Spring 2012 and thus no longer in stores…

    PrestonAugust 16th, 2012  5:46 AM

  • Desperately trying to find a good nude polish for my feet and hands for my upcoming wedding. I’ve been trying all summer to find the right shade. My skin is really light, so the ‘go-to’ for most people (Ballet Slippers) is too chalky for me.
Kate Middleton had a combo of two colors for her wedding nails which looked perfect, I think.

    LizAugust 16th, 2012  10:47 AM

  • Please share the great nude color…just getting into that world, now that my nails have gotten healthier recently(have cancer)….also love the shoes! Love your blog!!! Hugs

    SheriAugust 25th, 2012  8:28 AM

  • My favorite nude shade is “Like Linen” by Essie. Several manicurists have told me they now suggest it to their customers who are looking for the right one. It’s not at all chalky.

    SusanJanuary 4th, 2013  12:11 AM

  • I totally agree on the pale nails! Never get tired of it. Would love info on the sandals!
