How to Brow

Last week (before we got hit with a massive wind storm that took out our power and internet, a definite con for working at home) my friend dropped by to talk about her daughter wanting to model. This is a topic I try to avoid but, she is a dear friend and actually, her daughter has a very cool look. More specifically, Livi has brows that could give Cara Delevingne below a run for her money.

This got me thinking about the prominence of brows today and what I could do to help my own. My brows are a bit of a bugaboo as I am blonde and there is just not a lot to them. For years I have used the little red Maybeline pencils. They work, but there must be something better. Bobbi Brown is my first stop and I am going to try both her eye brow powder kit and pencil.

Suggestions are very welcome…

  • I used to be a devoted fan to the above BB and still love. Now my go to is Blinc eyebrow mousse. As much as i hate to admit my age, my super thick brows started thinning all over In my late 30s. It’s a little thick in the new tube so scrape carefully before applying. Even in the heat it works great – I live in Abu Dhabi and my brows have survived the heat and humidity.

  • Tom Ford brow sculptor.
A brush at one end & an angled applicator at the other- perfect!

  • Anastasia’s Tinted Brow Gel. Equally their clear Brow Gel. Equally their Brow Powder Duo. Equally their Brow Wiz! Hands down, the very best brand for brows! But also: ELF’s Brow Kit. Super cheap, but the wax / gel is amazing.

  • I use bareMinerals brow color…it’s wonderful!

  • Tom Ford brow sculptor.

  • I use Anastasia’s Brow Whiz pencil and love that it doesn’t need to be sharpened. It has a little brush on the other end too.

  • I am blonde too and I would definitely check out the Anastasia brow line. Her brow whiz pencil is excellent as is her Tinted Brow Gel. I use the brow gel daily because it grooms the brows and evens the color and I use the pencil at night when I may want to define them a little more.

  • I have been very happy with the wax in the Benefit Brow-Zings kit. I usually use that and skip the powder that comes with it since I get the color I need, along with the control, by using the wax alone. And they definitely make a kit for blonde brows.

  • A fashion writer friend of mine once told me that having great brows is akin to a face lift. After I had them done (properly!), I wholeheartedly agreed with her!

  • I was focusing on my brows a few months ago and was at the hairdressers for a hair color. At his suggestion I had then colored. I couldn’t believe the lift it gave me. I definitely takes a little time off the face! As to make up, I’m just looking into that. I have seen some young women with the pencil and I thought it was stunning, but I’m a bit shy about doing it myself. The powder sounds user friendly, I will try.

  • Try Shisedo’s pack with brow powder and eye liner powder. The pack comes with perfectly angled brushes. I have used it for years and am very happy with it. Be careful with pencils, I was told they lead to brow thinning.

  • Benefit makes a great tinted brow gel….I would try that first. The other option is a brow tint which also works beautifully and lasts a month to six weeks. I too had thick dark brows which have started to lighten and thin a little, so I do the tint and also use the gel daily. It looks completely natural.

  • I just use a regular eyeshadow that’s not glittery. I have very dark hair, and my brows are black not brown, all the kits found in US are brown and look so tacky!! I just use a eyeliner angle brush and gently fill in the gaps. I should have listened to my mom and not pluck my brows like pamela anderson when I was in my 20s!!!

  • Anastasia’s brow gel is great for thinner and blond brows. The gel is tinted and immediately makes your brows look thicker and full. I also like Mac’s brow pencil – it stays on.

  • I used to use the Maybelline pencils for years as well! Now I also just use brown matte eyeshadow from Make Up Forever, and I have an angled brush from the line as well. I feel like the brow kits are not really necessary; I use my shadow and brush for other applications, so I also feel like it is the more cost effective way to go.

  • Blinc eyebrow mousse in blonde. It has a “mascara” type applicator. Adds a little color and also holds all the hairs in place. Available in an array of colors, including 3 different blonde tones!

  • Several people have already said it, but I’ll add my vote for Tom Ford’s brow sculptor. I was using Anastasia’s powder and brush, along with brow gel, and thought that was great–until I discovered Tom Ford’s pencil.

The best thing about his brow sculptor is that you never seem to get that harsh line that says, “I just penciled in my brows!” It just magically seems to fill in your brows. I have dark brown hair (but def. not black) and I use the “taupe” shade, but I know there is one for blondes.

Good luck with your search and hopefully you will let us know what you selected.

  • MAC cocotte shadow and an angle brush have been working for me to fill in the sparser areas of my dark brows but I must try the Tom Ford as so many are happy with it. I’ve tried pencil but prefer the look of the shadow/brush technique. I’m all thumbs with makeup anyway.

  • Suqqu Eyebrow Liquid Pen- Moss Green 01. Absolutely beautiful color with no red undertone, great for using on the run.

  • Laura Mercier makes an amazing little pot of eyebrow gel. Used with a special angled brush – super easy and it lasts all day.

  • I am a medium to dark blonde, and I use Clinique “charcoaled brow shaper”. It comes in a little slide tray and actually resembles eye shadow.
I use a q-tip with a little of the powder on it and lightly brush it on my brows backwards. If necessary, I then lightly fill in sparse areas. (I also have my brows tinted – they look great for about a week. When the tinting begins to fade, I use the above.)
