You asked for it

New month, new leaf. I get many comments asking me to show less expensive clothing. It’s not that I don’t ever wear more affordable pieces, it’s that I don’t like buying them online. I find that the sizing is often inconsistent which means I have to go try everything on. And there is the rub.

However, I hit H&M and found some great run-around basics. The navy jacket especially, it’s $35. and great if you drive a lot because it’s short. And the olive drab jeans and grey beanie are perfect trendy items that I don’t want to spend a fortune on.  The boots, by Ivanka Trump (believe it or not), are just above the knee in supple suede with a gold zipper– I bought these for my daughter and they are awesome and under $200.!

  • Preston- thank you so much for this post. It’s great to see some good basics at really affordable prices. I try to spend on good quality basics that will see more than one season in use. But sometimes the mix of high and low priced items is what I’m aiming for – as are all of my friends. I will definitely pop into H&M as these items look much more expensive than they are.

  • This is one of your best posts yet! Looking chic when you are running to the grocery store etc for those of us that live in the city is a real challenge for me! Putting on my celine boots and cashmere burberry pants is not what I “go for” on my way out.

  • Thought I was the only other adult around that relied on “rabbit, rabbit” to ensure a month’s worth of good luck – some childhood superstitions die hard!

  • Hi-
I predict that a blend of chic “high” + “low” editorial will inspire so many and Keep it Chic will soar to new heights!

  • Great post on “low”. I may not be able to afford everything you post but I still like seeing the “high” end to direct me.

  • Discovered Ivanka Trumps’ shoes about a year ago at Bloomingdales. Definitely worth a look, great price point. Styles tend to be clean with a good cut.

  • The navy jacket is fab, I’m off to find one (on the high street!)

  • I would love to see a series of “Preston’s Essentials” so those of us who are starting to build our chic core wardrobes can draw upon your expertise.

Buying fewer, higher quality items that will be chic season after season really resonates with me….it can just be a little overwhelming with so many options out there.

Thanks for your daily dose of chic inspiration, Preston!

  • Lovely inspirational post! I could not find the navy jacket (damn it) in the store or online. I did find the cable beanie in an ivory colour for my auburn haired daughter =D and a men’s black watchman’s one for myself. They do have some great basic items right now!

  • I popped into H&M this evening following your post on lower priced item earlier today. I bought the navy jacket, grey cable knit beanie , grey jeans all for €80. I will create a great run around outfit using an existing j crew cashmere jumper and Alexander wang loafers or Ann demeulemeester ankle boots – perfect mix of high low priced pieces using new additions as well as old favourites. Definitely will add H&M to my shopping favourites as they seem to have some great basic pieces in neural colours at very reasonable prices.

  • I have those olive jeans, and I actually like them a lot better than my JCrew Toothpicks. Really soft, does not shrink and does not stretch out. It’s my favorite a close second to my JBrands.

  • Kelli,

Here is a link to the navy coat – looks like they have sizes 2-12 available.

  • Thanks Kelli, I was going to grab the link too. All pieces in the post are on the site.

  • The other reason I go into the store to buy lower priced clothing is I want to see the fabric, the way it’s made, and the fit.

  • Uniqlo is another great place for cheap basics that look more expensive than they are.

    BeccaNovember 1st, 2013  6:15 PM

  • Super helpful post. With twin 3 year olds, I purchased ALL of your suggestions in this post. You nailed it. Thank you.
