Shopping like a man

Want an oversized sweater? I did, so I hit the men’s department at J. Crew and bought this lambswool crewneck in grey, and black, in a size small.  And the best bit– they are on sale online.

Pure wool can be scratchy so I wear a long sleeve T underneath.

If you follow KiC,  you know that I am not a fan of J.Crew women’s clothing, so obviously, this is not a sponsored post…

  • Always a good idea…classic men’s wear from the men’s dept.!

  • Preston-the coat that Emmanuel Alt is wearing is indeed Rick Owen(s ) Palais Royal suede and fur! (spelling). It is on I want to be an Alt blog under Her Closet.

  • I agree about J Crew womenswear, and the new London shop was really underwhelming when I visited last week.
Lots of the clothes looked crushed, as though they’d been packed for far too long in packing cases ;-( and not one salesperson said Hello the whole time I was in there.

  • Hmmm. . . Have been very uninspired lately at my local Crew. May have to wander back to the mens dept. That looks nice & cozy. Cheers, Laura from

  • Great tip. I have been very unhappy with women’s clothes and kids clothes at J. Crew. Maybe I should give men’s department a chance. Still concerned about quality though. Please post a review after a couple of wears.

  • Funny…I was in the J.Crew Mens store shopping last week for my son and picked up a sweater for myself! (cream merino w/elbow patches) I like the length and cut and it fits great. The womenswear doesn’t do it for me either.

    A Note On StyleNovember 19th, 2013  5:18 PM

  • I like the shapes at J. Crew but they have serious quality issues. Every time I buy their cashmere sweaters I regret it.

    laurenNovember 19th, 2013  7:01 PM

  • as someone that worked at jcrew (corporate) for years – I can attest the quality of the mens far outshines that of the women’s!

  • I got the men’s camo shirt in xs and it fits like a dream and is a great weight. Nice, heavy cotton, contemporary fit. Awesome over a tank or peeking out under a sweater. I always think their kids’ clothes are much more charming than the women’s. But I do like their “In Good Company” options sometimes.

  • How is sizing though? I’ve found J. Crew women’s sizing to be enormous….

  • Love hearing everyone’s opinions on J. Crew. I’ve been a customer for 22 years and it’s interesting to see how their style and quality have evolved. I miss the days when they were more “classic with a twist”. I remember a gorgeous heavy ribbed lambswool v-neck sweater that I got from them as well as a pair of camel wool pants…fully lined with a nice cuff. I do love the line of jeans that Goldsign has done for them and always check out their Collection. Thanks to you all, I’ll keep my eye on the men’s dept. more often as well. Is the men’s cashmere better than the women’s or the same?

  • LOVE your blog. A good friend told me about it and now addicted. Thanks for the inspiration. If you like that sweater – you may like this one which is cotton/cashmere blend – a little more the J. Crew – but pretty reasonable for cashmere.. You will be cozy with the cashmere and won’t need to layer unless you want to.

  • I have worn JCrew t’s forever and I like some of their little accessories (socks, iphone covers, winter hats) and often, the merino knits. No to everything else. I might check out men’s wear again. My mom is quite tall and used to shop that department so the sleeves would be long enough!

  • Kim, I have also been a J. Crew customer for over 20 years. I particularly loved the style and quality of the wool women’s coats I purchased in those days, but they don’t attract me now. I agree with you also regarding the women’s cashmere sweaters…….the dark colored ones pill and look old quickly………….. except a beige boyfriend cardigan I purchased looks good. Love it! I have purchased the men’s cashmere sweaters……..the cable style for my husband and he loves them and they wear really well. Love Goldsign collection also!

  • I generally agree about the quality, but I adore my J Crew white jeans. And I got the Tippi sweater in gray in a larger size and wear it like a sweatshirt. I love it and it’s on sale too.

  • Too funny, just bought a crew from mens department…although pink, does that count?! Just saw the Aquazzura pumps, take a look at Ferragamo black patent with ankle tie my new favourite shoe.

    brenda murphyNovember 20th, 2013  11:15 AM

  • I don’t buy too much there, but I have gotten several pairs of shoes from them. Also, a couple of pieces of costume jewelry. I’ve been satisfied with the quality in those items, but I can’t speak to the clothing. Very expensive items geared toward and marketed to a very young demographic. No wonder so many young people are deep in credit card debt.

  • Haha, That’s Not My Age beat me to it. Yes I did indeed buy the green. In London we were all aghast at the UK womenswear prices (pretty much equal to dollars -ouch). I had a look in the menswear stores and fell in love with ALL the colours of the lambswool. I think they were £60. GREAT cut and fit if you love an oversized proportion.
