Bohemian Rhapsody

This Altuzarra dress may possibly be the frontrunner in the race to being THE dress of SS14. Seems that bohemian chic is here to stay, and I’m delighted. Yet, we should all heed Christa D’Souza’s advice from her column in the current issue of Net-a-Porter’s The Edit— “An ELEMENT of boho, yes, but NEVER, ever the whole shebang. And, as always, keep it LUXE”.

  • I like this a lot better as a top to wear with jeans unless you are on an island or some such place!

  • I’m not in love with it. There’s something to folkloric or “Heidi” about it for my eye.

    KathyJanuary 24th, 2014  10:16 AM

  • This dress looks like blouses I used to wear in college – and I graduated in 1973! I don’t really see how Bohemian can be kept luxe, unless you take a look at the price tag! That is kind of a hypocritical statement to make, since Bohemian is really anything BUT luxe!

  • I love this dress, but I fear I am to short for it. what are your thoughts? are there chic bohemian lil gals? I love your site and read it daily!! All that Vogue training Preston!!

  • I love it! Perfect for summer.

    Lisa EastmanJanuary 24th, 2014  11:23 AM

  • Lisa B, Shorten it!

    PrestonJanuary 24th, 2014  11:31 AM

  • I agree with Kathy. It looks like a costume to me. I wish it had just ONE of the elements of boho style…the embroidery, the lace-up front, or the peasant style…instead of “the whole shebang”.

    A Note On StyleJanuary 24th, 2014  2:19 PM

  • Love! Divine! It has silk – luxe! True boho is cotton from India. Want to order toute suite!

  • Oh it’s beautiful Preston! Would look wonderful with sandals in summer, flat or heeled, and elegant in cool weather with tall black boots. I would wear this today if it were in my wardrobe. Is it silk Preston, or cotton?? I’m having a thing for silk dresses right now. They just seem perfect to me.

  • I think I would start yodeling if I wore this dress.

    MargoJanuary 24th, 2014  10:22 PM

  • Bisbee’s comment rings true for me, too. Although there are many silhouettes I would happily return to throughout the decades, bohemian/hippie is not one of them. I had my fill of embroidered ‘smock tops” and peasant dresses and bell bottoms–just try riding a bicycle to campus in any of those items! The fact that looking like a boho country girl will cost upwards of $1,000 takes some of the au natural spirit out of these looks. : )

  • I love boho looks in summer and on vacation. I like the dress but with the long sleeves and fitted waist I think it would be too warm for the times I’d want to wear it. I really wish they had left off the sheer bottom- I thought that trend was over.

  • Beautiful dress. I wore boho in the 70’s but we called it “hippie”. And, of course, none of us could afford a dress like this. If I had the lifestyle for this dress, I would buy it in a minute! I’m really loving Altuzarra!

    RobbiJanuary 25th, 2014  1:48 PM

  • Love this; it’s a reflection of simpler times. Nice post, Preston.

    HeatherJanuary 26th, 2014  9:26 AM

  • I love the dress, but a non-sheer border on the bottom would make me love it more. I never understood the appeal of the high-low trend, so I don’t find it necessary. I don’t think I will ever tire of “elegant bohemian”.

    AprilJanuary 26th, 2014  6:09 PM

  • Now that it’s on sale, it’s worth serious consideration! Beautiful dress.
