The March issues are starting to fill my mailbox, a bright spot on these snowy days. As I was flipping through the new Vanity Fair, I came across this great pic of Joan Didion from 1970. The image is included in the “American Cool” portrait exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, D.C. I think a field trip is in order.

  • I find this image rather frightening. Something about her exhausted expression, her frail frame and the cigarette, all make me feel like I am viewing someone very tragic.

  • I don’t think there was too much tragedy in her life in 1970…although she certainly did have to deal with tragic events much later on…
