On My Mind

Summer’s End

Martha's Vineyard This has been one of the best summers, mostly because of the sensational weather.  But there was a nip in the air on the Vineyard and it felt like fall is just around the corner.

This week may be packed with back-to-school errands, but it’s also the start of the U.S. Open and the Hampton Classic, and nothing beats tennis and riding in my book. Both take the sting out of the impending start of school.

  • The older I get the faster the summer goes, especially this one with the very few HOT, sticky days! Happy back to new schools for your girls. Time to enjoy lots of tennis and riding at end of the summer.

  • Same here – except it’s a holiday in the UK today and so obviously pouring with rain!

  • Lovely photo. I always find this time of year to be bittersweet. While it’s still nice out most of the hazy, balmy days of summer are behind and the cool, crisp days of autumn quietly beckon.

  • ‘Bittersweet’ is the exact adjective I would choose to describe late August! I always have a somewhat sad feeling at the end of summer, perhaps because the relaxing, no-schedule period of summer is coming to an end, and memories of our children leaving home again. But I also feel a bit of anxiety myself at this time of year–which I am certain dates back to my own college years and all the fear/stress/anxiety that went with it. My husband and I (both over 50) to this day have frightening recurring dreams about never attending a 7:30 a.m. class–something like a Psych 101 auditorium-style class that was completely stupid, only to show up one day and the final exam is being handed out, and being the only one in the room who didn’t seem to know it was coming. In my dream, I forget that I even signed up for the class, didn’t attend it once, and wake up in a cold sweat! : )

  • I’ve been envious of your warm weather for months. Happy to say that down under the first signs of spring are in the air. It’s been lovely, however, to have wrapped myself up in lovely knits and jackets with boots and enjoy the distinct seasons of where I live. Winter holds as many delights as summer… It just takes a moment to reacquaint oneself.
    Enjoy.
