My Uniform

Feeling Blue

Marni So, I bought a blue bag. Yep, blue. They call it navy, but it’s actually lighter and brighter, more of a cobalt or smalt (I looked it up). The bag comes in lots of colors that are more “me”, but I quite like this one. Although the tags are still attached, it’s sitting on my desk so I can ponder it, which means it’s probably here to stay. I’ve wanted a more structured, ladylike bag, and this one by Marni fit the bill. The best bit is the adjustable strap which can extend to be worn messenger style, a real win-win.

This will be my run-around outfit for early fall. Navy still feels fresh and I cannot get enough ribbed sweaters, especially from J. Crew. I’m not always their biggest fan (sequins on Tees, really?), but this season they have the best basics, the pieces they became famous for, and I’m buying them up.

And I’m starting my search for the perfect loafers with these by Manolo Blahnik, will let you know.

Sweater, jeans, bag, loafers.

  • Can’t wait to see what you find for your perfect loafer! A pair of Tod’s perhaps, although not the most durable but comfortable, and so stylish on my Italian friend!
    The handbag is a keeper.
Mark Sikes is feeling navy and grey which is my favourite combination.
As an aside, love the fact that I found Mark Sikes’ blog then yours quite independently of Mark’s blog. Next thing I know, Mark and you have found each other. You are both stylish, enthusiastic and positive.
Thank you for your lovely blog.

  • my husband bought me the LV sophia bag in navy last year and it has become my favorite – lived in navy/gray and navy/black all winter – look at acne flex jeans in the color basement – the perfect blue/black to go with everything. I only wish the LV bag could be cross body!

  • Hi Preston, thank you for the lovely post. I’ve been looking at this bag (online) for a month or so and haven’t gotten to BGs or Bs to see it in person. Could you let me know how handy/size-wise you find the divided compartments? I have a large sunglass case and I wonder if it will fit in there along with my mini-ipad. Thanks again!

  • I love loafers. Any thoughts on color trend in them? Brown or black, is one fresher looking than the other? Penny vs. tassel? I like them both, but they do have a different look. Love to hear thoughts.

  • LOVE this post and can’t wait to hear about the loafers. I am obsessed with blue – not to mention ribbed sweaters! I love black/blue brown/blue gray/blue and just blue! I may have to get my blue jean Kelly out just to add some fun! Thanks for the inspiration as always!

  • I love dressing in one (neutral) tone and I love, love, love the handbag. Now I just need to source it in London!

  • I would also love a discussion about loafers! I’m currently looking at a few, but find I’m indecisive about color / style.

I’d love to hear your thought, as well as the thought of your readers.

  • I so wish they had not added a breast pocket to that sweater. Otherwise, it would be perfect.

  • LOVE those Manolos, definitely a worthy investment. I buy vintage (deadstock) Bass Weejuns on ebay. A bit risky due to the UK/US sizing (I’m in London) but have been lucky so far.The quality of vintage Weejuns beats modern ones hands down. I have both tassel and penny, I’d say penny loafers are slightly more classic. Brown loafers seem to age better than black I think…

  • Love Everything! This will also be my new pre-fall look. I have always loved the blues and navy, which always looks so Chic. I also love the black/navy combination. Love this Post!

  • Love the blue outfit. Blue and brown look fresh. The blue bag is gorgeous!
April: I would get the brown penny loafer just like Preston showed in the post. Brown looks more interesting, warmer, for fall and winter. It goes with a lot of colors including black. Black is good, too. But it is better for spring/summer in my opinion. but then you would wear sandals or Birkenstock instead when it is warmer.

  • J.M. Weston has some great loafers, too. Their classic 180 is available for both men and women. Cognac would also be a lovely complement to the blue.
