On My Mind

Shopping My Closet

Chanel I’d been struggling with what to give three of my dearest friends who were really there for me this year. The usual gifts felt uninspired. Then I had an ‘aha’ moment—let them shop my closet. Or more specifically, I’ll offer each friend a Chanel bag. I’ve had these bags for years but, I’m not wearing them these days and they should be worn. Fortunately, my friends won’t want the same ones. A classic black and a small classic tobacco bag are off to new homes. And I’m hoping the classic beige jersey bag will have a new life in Palm Beach…

  • Wow, I wish you were my friend, very generous. Love the tobacco bag.

    MonicaDecember 17th, 2014  4:18 PM

  • How cool. Great idea.

  • So sweet and generous, and also embedded with meaning as they’re carrying something of a friend they love and care for.

    KathyDecember 17th, 2014  4:44 PM

  • Dear Santa I want a friend like you!

  • Such a lovely story, I was just talking to my sister about similar themes: I have a few pieces of jewllery that were expensive “impulse buys” and lovely but never worn (I know, I know, never again). We agreed that if I knew someone who would love them it was fine to gift them rather than have them languish in a box.

  • What a wonderful story…the true meaning of gift giving. Just imagine how they will feel when they carry their Chanel knowing it was gifted to them with love and friendship. You have such a kind soul Preston.

  • So coincidental. I’m giving my one and only Chanel bag to my mom, who has never owned one. Shhh! it’s a secret!

    toriDecember 17th, 2014  9:49 PM

  • That’s the best kind of gift.

    LeeDecember 17th, 2014  11:05 PM

  • brilliant idea! I think it should be an annual event! ; )

    LisaDecember 17th, 2014  11:06 PM

  • I have done that in the past but now that I have a teenage daughter, I tend to put all my classics aside to let her choose from then in a few years. But still a great idea!

  • Lucky friends!
You’re nice, I think that Chanel bag is a great gift
I’ll try to follow you and I’ll take your post as a good advice

  • Great idea! Retro, vintage items are so popular, people are buying them on ebay, etc. and giving them as gifts. You have made it even more personal and stylish with your own bags! A very special gift.

    AprilDecember 18th, 2014  10:14 AM

  • Can I be your friend?

    ameeDecember 18th, 2014  10:42 AM

  • Love this idea – have consigned some classics in the past because I was concerned friends might feel uncomfortable, but you have inspired me! I just wish I had more friends with the same shoe size to receive me of some slightly off-base choices that remain unworn in their boxes. At least now I will not hesitate to extend the invitation! These will be special gifts to your friends for many reason and years to come!

  • You are such an incredible friend ! I think this is an amazing present, and so thoughtful as well… And you’re right, those Chanel bags SHOULD be worn !

    carolineDecember 18th, 2014  12:33 PM

  • Lovely.

    bisbeeDecember 18th, 2014  1:13 PM

  • Why do you have so many?

    CarolDecember 18th, 2014  10:22 PM

  • This is re-gifting re-defined! A lovely gesture indeed, but I must admit I am curious as to why a woman buys four Chanel bags, all remarkably similar, in the first place?

    PaulaDecember 19th, 2014  2:45 AM

  • I had 6 bags– a chocolate brown went to my mother, 3 to my friends and 2 black ones still in my closet. But one of them is so old and worn, I only wear it in the rain. A few were gifts from my magazine days and when I worked with Karl Lagerfeld.

    PrestonDecember 19th, 2014  5:29 AM

  • I’d be more than happy to take the one you wear in the rain off your hands!

    EllieDecember 22nd, 2014  8:52 PM

  • Had this idea too a couple of weeks ago — except it was my sister (who is coming home for the holidays) that I invited and it was my jewelry closet. I just couldn’t find the right gift for her, and I just had too many that I don’t get to wear, though each piece is loved and has a story. Glad that this was not such a strange idea after all 🙂
