On The Upper East Side

Some of my best inspiration comes from the women I see on the street, especially on the Upper East Side. Every morning I drop my daughter at school on 91st then, I walk straight down Madison to my office at 70th—this is prime run-around outfit territory. Two of the most ubiquitous UES items this winter, and a somewhat unlikely pairing, are the Hermès Evelyne messenger bag and shearling clog boots. Functional with a touch of boho-chic—I get it.

So, I went to check out the clog boots at No. 6 Store in Soho, and they are pretty great. I know, many of you will pooh-pooh clogs, but they are a big trend, and I’m looking forward to getting a pair.

  • Ha! I’ve had those boot clogs for 8 years and have wore them once! I will revisit them.

    BetsyJanuary 25th, 2015  9:19 PM

  • I have No. 6 clog boots and I love them!

    LilahJanuary 25th, 2015  10:11 PM

  • I own this bag (minus the adjustable strap) in dark brown calf, purchased in 2000 or so. Love, love, love!

My only issue with clogs is that I have high arches and I have to grip my toes to keep them on. At my lovely age, shoes must perform well.

    PaulaJanuary 26th, 2015  1:57 AM

  • I have two pair that I purchased three years ago. They are from the UGGS brand. I saw them in store at Nordstrom, but I was unsure of the purchase, so I found them much cheaper online and I’ve been wearing them since.

  • Barneys private label…always on sale and same look. I tried no.6 no Bueno for me either…
You need to be downtown for inspiration!! 🙂 stay safe in the storm.

    SheilaJanuary 26th, 2015  7:30 AM

  • I have yet to find a pair that suits my high-arched, slightly wide feet. But I do like the look on other people!

    joannawnycJanuary 26th, 2015  7:31 AM

  • No. 6 are the best. I love the clogs and the boots. I have pretty much worn out my boots from years of wear– they are warm, waterproof and really comfortable. Just great.

    LFRJanuary 26th, 2015  7:36 AM

  • I have three Evelynes in my collection and there is no better bag for running around and for travel. Definitely stylish, yet practical investments!

    CatJanuary 26th, 2015  7:40 AM

  • I have loved your blog for years!!! I laughed when I read your post. I live on the UWS. This has been my “uniform” for the last 13 years since my daughter started nursery!

    SuzanneJanuary 26th, 2015  8:25 AM

  • I’ve worn clogs all my life. Great for my flat feet and weak skinny ankles. Classic clogs from Kerstin Adolphson in Sweden with thick cashmere socks in winter. I love the Evelyne and the boots are fab but as soon as I see something becoming a trend I tend to stay well away.

    RTGJanuary 26th, 2015  8:30 AM

  • I use my hermes Evelynes everyday I have both black and etoupe- best everyday bags, timeless and versatile. My cold weather boots have so far been Peneople Chilvers Incredible boots ( very warm and cosy) but the No 6 clogs look amazing.

    MelanieJanuary 26th, 2015  8:42 AM

  • Love the boots – checked out their site – they have a great selection of styles so many clogs but unfortunately they aren’t available in Toronto – at least not that I know of …..

    Sue TothJanuary 26th, 2015  9:20 AM

  • I am a big fan of clogs, they are comfortable and give me that little boost of height while still serving as a run around shoe. I have not seen the clog boot, but am impressed with the link. I am already trying to decide which ones I want! I love the natural wood clog, but wonder if once exposed to the elements it will not be as attractive, making the black bottom a safer choice. Thanks for sharing!

    AprilJanuary 26th, 2015  9:37 AM

  • Great commentary. Loved the 90’s and down when I lived in NYC in the 90’s no pun intended

    MarcyJanuary 26th, 2015  9:53 AM

  • Have the bag, and just ordered the lower heeled black clog boot – will replace my Uggs hopefully. So many great looking clogs on the site.

    KathyJanuary 26th, 2015  10:31 AM

  • I go back and forth on the Evelyne – it seems so functional and I love it in etoupe but the big logo bugs me a little. Maybe the solution is to wear it with the H on the inside.

ps – I think dropoff/pickup at E91 is a great source of runaround inspiration! More pickup than dropoff; fewer yoga pants. My middle schooler is now allowed to walk home by herself (when it is not snowing) and I feel somewhat deprived. Fortunately I still have E93.

    ellaJanuary 26th, 2015  11:09 AM

  • I own 3 pairs of No. 6 clog boots – have had them for over 5 years – they are the best. Sweedish Hasbeens and SVEN also have great clog brands. So comfy but not for walking through snow – very slippery!

    ZoeJanuary 26th, 2015  11:17 AM

  • I never would have thought clogs were big in the UES ! The only people I ever saw wear them are Julianne Moore and SJP ! I have to admit I’m not a fan… But the Evelyne is very chic !

    carolineJanuary 26th, 2015  12:42 PM

  • Love the clogs, would like to see how they look with clothes. As far as the handbag , I have never understood wearing other people’s initials or names on clothing or accessories.

    RobynJanuary 26th, 2015  4:31 PM

  • ella….the “H” is actually supposed to be worn on the inside…I believe the bag was originally designed to carry horse grooming equipment. The tools were often placed in the bag wet, hence the perforated H, which allowed them to dry….

    CariJanuary 26th, 2015  8:48 PM

  • The perforations/ H definitely goes to the body; the snap clasp is on the other side, so it is worn to the outside.

    PaulaJanuary 27th, 2015  1:12 AM

  • I have ordered a pair of shearling lined clog boots and feel this is a fresh take on the normal runaround look. The uber stylish Amanda Ross posted a photo of actress Kim Raver wearing hers and they looked really good.

Thank you for posting Preston – it’s so nice to get fresh inspiration that’s also practical for everyday wear.

    MelanieJanuary 27th, 2015  7:02 AM

  • I’m in two minds about the Evelyne- there is something chic about it- but for travel there is no zip so you are susceptible to pick pocketers.

Everyone seems to wear it with the H showing? Is that considered vulgar?

    CharlotteJanuary 27th, 2015  7:38 AM

  • Just curious, regarding the No.6 clog boots, the site states that the boots run 1 – 1.5 sizes small. Is that consistent with what readers here who have purchased them already have found ?

    AprilJanuary 27th, 2015  9:36 AM

  • April, I recommend that you call the shop, they were very helpful re. sizing.

    PrestonJanuary 27th, 2015  9:39 AM

  • Just received the gold Evelyne for my birthday but thinking I might exchange for etoupe. Torn. Thoughts?

    JenJanuary 27th, 2015  12:54 PM

  • Dear Ella, that’s the way we all SHOULD wear Evelyne bag actually:)

    IzabelaJanuary 28th, 2015  9:34 AM

  • With H inside, I mean…

    IzabelaJanuary 28th, 2015  9:38 AM

  • I’ve always worn my Evelyne with the H on my body side, as I have access to the outside smaller pocket then.

    KathyJanuary 28th, 2015  9:44 AM

  • Thanks, Cari and Izabela – I knew I had heard that somewhere but didn’t remember the detail. Oddly none of the UES runarounders seems to follow this advice – but it looks great when worn the right way!

    ellaJanuary 28th, 2015  9:45 AM

  • For the record, I bought the 5″ mid-heel clog boots in black after I saw 3 women wearing them on Monday—love!

    PrestonJanuary 28th, 2015  3:07 PM

  • Preston- would love to see a photo of you wearing them?

    MelanieJanuary 28th, 2015  6:07 PM

  • Dear Jen, I have etoupe and I would love to have a gold one too (I will get soon). It’s going so nice with white in the summer time, I would not change it but consider etoupe for the future. Enjoy your Evelyne!

    IzabelaJanuary 29th, 2015  11:37 AM

  • Isabela,
You and all my friends agree that I should keep the gold. Done! It’s going to look great this Summer with all my whites. Thanks!

    JenJanuary 30th, 2015  3:54 PM

  • Tod’s has almost every season Gomini in this colour (or something very close to)…Take care!

    IzabelaJanuary 31st, 2015  4:34 PM

  • purchased size 40 (5″ mid heel clog in black) . Worn twice before realizing that size 39 better. If anyone interested in purchasing at discount , pls call 718-222-0808
