Monday Morning Must-Have

Now that I’ve amassed quite the collection of ponchos, and if the Chloé cape is a go, I’m considering replacing my small cross-body bag; it’s the only style that works with both. This mini Marni Trunk  is just the ticket. I love that it’s structured, and despite the size, it can hold what I need.

Speaking of bags, it seems like there’s a lack of cannot-live-without styles. I felt guilty about stockpiling a number of Céline hobos, but I’m glad that I did because I still love them. What bag is on your radar for fall?

  • I’ve had my eye on the Chloe Georgia Crossbody in black or burgundy. It looks pretty small though.

  • Altuzarra Ghianda saddle bag

  • I’m looking straight at Chloe for handbags this fall. I’ve received and returned the Mansur Gavriel crossbody. I love their bucket but this didn’t do it for me.

  • Love the Mansur Gavriel. But, are they ever in stock, anywhere?

  • I love my Celine hobo in cognac so much, that I haven’t really been looking. It’s aging so beautifully. I’d love something in an indigo or bottle green though. I do love that Marni you’ve shown. I’m planning to buy a pair of knee high boots for the first time in years and I think that’s where I’ll be spending the money.

  • I’d still love a Celine edge – probably black.

  • I love the Céline belt, or the Chloé Faye. This Marni would look spectacular on you, it’s totally your style !

  • I haven’t seen anything that made my heart beat faster – no new colors or shapes that I have to have. I bought a little Chanel in navy (because it is just hard to resist navy with gold hardware) but I will probably try not to buy anything else right now.

  • Recalling a previous post about dressing for who you are and not who you fantasize being- late into spring I realized I needed another good everyday tote and settled on the Chloe dilan medium sized tote in black, but immediately had to store it away as we were heading into summer when leather bags are rarely used in my wardrobe because I’m shuttling suncreened children to and from the pool. And sporting events. As we head into fall I’m looking forward to finally using my tote. However, I recently bought the soho wristlet from Gucci and have loved feeling liberated from a bag. Reality of carrying my and children’s items will ensure that my tote gets a spin soon.

  • Two seasons ago I purchased a wonderful Salvatore Ferragamo structured bag in burgundy/bordeaux color, which can be adjusted to wear cross body. It is lady like, slightly trapezoid shape, gold hardware, no logos, small enough to keep on my lap if sitting at a theatre or concert hall, but not silly small. It goes with jeans as well as late day dresses, but definitely not a cocktail bag. The color is wonderful with grey, navy, & camel. I receive more comments on this bag! If I were to purchase a new bag this fall, however, it would definitely be something from Chanel, possibly a gorgeous shade of blue.

  • I just received delivery of a great new little bag in natural leather which can be worn on my shoulder or cross body. It’s by an English designer named Mimi Berry and is called “Eric”, for some reason. It is a sweet and simple, beautifully made little bag and fits my (also) new Nina Ricci wallet and my phone and my soon to be sized down daily lipstick collection purse, but not much else. I am wanting to stop carrying so much stuff each day, so this smaller bag is part of that plan.

  • This Marni bag is very good looking. I bought The Row Sideby bag earlier this summer, and returned it because I thought the leather quality was ‘eh.’ I love the Celine hobos, but haven’t liked any of the colors available this season. Ultimately, I have decided to forsake any ‘it’ bags, and instead invest only in classics. I just bought an Hermes bag, and frankly, I think I’d rather have a few top-notch bags that will hold their value. When the weather is crummy or the day calls for the subway, I use a non-descript canvas and leather tote.

  • I wasn’t a fan when it find came out but now I really do love the mini Fendi Peek a Boo. I was thinking of buying it in green or blue snake. It’s the perfect size for London because we need to carry a small umbrella most days!

  • Lisa – I recently continued my minimalization obsession and sold ALL my Hermes, among other past and forever “it” bags – including a very lightly used Birkin – not because they once weren’t used and important to my wardrobe, but upon discovering Mansur Gabriel, I subscribed to their newsletter which alerts when restocking will occur on their site. Unfortunately, their site has a no returns policy, but I saw a sample of the Large Tumble tote in Barneys – just in a color that wasn’t “me” and so on the day of the restocking, I bought two – one in black and one in white. The entire line sells out within an hour or less online, but if you are CERTAIN about what you want via viewing styles and colors elsewhere, you can prep and grab it from their website when the have their restocking days, but it’s an online madhouse! The “tumble” is soft, pebbled and likely not as useful in an urban environment as the stiffer “calf coated” version, but that’s of course a personal decision. Hope this helps!

  • Preston, love your latest picks – I have not yet fallen in love with anything that fits my “real” life yet, but I know I will – too busy at the beach to think about wool right now, but I’m sure I will regret this attitude once everything is sold out! A few days ago, you posted a lovely duo of women dressed in black and white, both wearing the Hermes Oran in black. I’m curious what your thoughts are regarding the Oran and/or the Blahnik “Grella” – their version of same, but not as obvious an “H”. They are both lovely sandals – the Oran is just a bit more “logo” oriented, but it is subtle. Look forward to hearing your feedback and thank you!

  • I have 2 small children and work full time so I really to the earlier posts. I would love to surrender to this cross body bag but I can’t see how it would currently fit into my lifestyle. For those of you in the same boat, what do you all do?

    KarinaAugust 12th, 2015  9:13 AM

  • @Tabitha Love your bold move of selling ALL of your Hermes. I’ve thinking about doing the same, though I keep going back and forth between do I or don’t I. I’ve buying Loro Piana bags lately, the Globe, in neutral and bright colors. The leather is amazing and ages well. Can’t decide though to continue on this course, sell the Hermes bags and Chanels OR keep them all. What to do?

    RonicaAugust 12th, 2015  3:51 PM

  • Ronica,

I say go for it! I have a fabulous resource for exceptional and completely legitimate consignment and they often offer to buy items up front. They have sold EVERY bag and clutch I have ever sent them for very good prices. Please email me at if you’d like further details.

  • Bought the Chloe Georgia and sent it back as it was so small my wallet didn’t fit in it, let alone sunglasses, readers, lipstick and mobile. Just got a Chanel navy shopping tote (smaller of 2 sizes) with a gorgeous burgundy interior. Perfection. Have my eye on the Chloe Medium Faye in brown suede next……….
