On The Hunt For

The Trench

One thing I know for sure is that I need a new trench. Once upon a time I had the perfect Gucci trench coat, but it’s long gone. And for some unknown reason, I never replaced it. This is not an item that I will skimp on–I’m looking for one that’s well-made and will go-the-distance.

  • I love trench coats and they’re some beauties in your post. Do you need it to be waterproof? I have the classic khaki trench from Burberry and the shorter length Burberry (above) in black. Have had them for years. I love the army green Burberry -so classic.

  • That’s a good question. Preferably waterproof, but it is a perfect spring coat either way.

  • I love a good trenchcoat, mine (a Burberry) is a life saver. You don’t need 10, just the one that will look perfect on you in my opinion !

  • I just bought the cutest trench from SS16 Prada. It is fitted at the top, but the bottom has so many folds it looks like origami. The color is talco. It is so fun, but yet sophisticated.

  • A good trench is an absolute must in a wardrobe. I have a mid length black Burberry that I love and wear year round. I just invested in another but this time in khaki. Can’t wait to wear it. Expensive, but worth the money as they are classic timeless pieces that are chic and stylish.

  • If anyone is looking for a great quality stylish trench at a slightly more affordable price I can definitely recommend winserlondon.com. I think they ship to the US now. Caroline Issa has the midi-length trench and Emma Watson is often seen in the short one. which is quite an endorsement. Have a look! I’m also a huge fan of Max Mara’s cube collection and have winter and summer versions.

  • I recommend Loro Piana Storm System. Chic and timeless made with state-of-the-art material. Admittedly, it is an investment.

  • If you want a classic trench then you have to stick to the classics – Burberry or Aquascutum!!!

  • I don’t have a trench recommendation, but I love “Claude’s” handle!

    SharonFebruary 8th, 2016  7:55 PM

  • Yes totally agree with the above – burberry or acquascutum

  • Always love the classic trench although the British weather often requires warmth as well which the trench doesn’t always offer. I have a classic maxmara which leads me to ask how not to look too dated in it. I spotted a pair of gold brogues but wondered if that my be a step too far. would value your opinion on how a mum stays reasonable trendy/classic in a trench.

  • I realize the APC is well below the price point of the rest of these but I do not recommend at all unless you have a fabulous tailor. Shapeless and stiff – I am still annoyed at myself for buying it several years ago when I really should have just taken the Burberry plunge.

  • I’ve always wanted a proper classic trench, but have never taken the plunge. With the Canadian dollar so low these days, now is not the time for an investment piece. I’ve always wondered about JCrew’s icon trench. Anyone had any luck with it?

  • hi preston, i’ve been ‘secretly’ enjoying your blog for quite a little while now. thank you for your insights, which are usually simpatico to what’s going on in my mind and right on target. i invite you to follow my blog; it’s more interior design, art and architecture, but includes some fashion as well.

and as for the trench….burberry….it’s all about the classic.
