A Classic White Shirt

Peasant blouses are great, but I’ve been reaching for my classic white button-downs more often recently. They look sharp under a sweater or on their own with the cuffs rolled up.

I originally pulled this Peter Lindbergh image, which I cast for Vogue ages ago, because I’ve been talking to a lot of agents about the current models. There are many terrific models today and I hope we’ll see a shift to career longevity, which made me think of this group and that at least four of these women are still working.

  • Such great choices. Just ordered the Frame and the Joseph. I’d already decided to give most of my peasant blouses to my daughter!

  • J Crew white shirts are classic and good quality – especially the Thomas Mason ones.

  • I have a few from Brooks Brothers that have certainly gone the distance, but there are a lot of other ones to love– Theory, Joseph, Equipment, Toteme, and Velvet all make classic, beautiful shirts, and Frame (and here) has a slightly more feminine version, which is very nice.

  • You cast that?!?! Oh my word, Preston! It’s one of my all-time favourites. Wow!

Now, as for white oxford shirts, I’m with you. I always have two in constant rotation, even in the summer, as well as one or two light blue ones (I’m so funky!). I live for the Brooks Brothers ones, especially the tailored fit, non-iron ones. I recently wore holes through the elbows of one and ran in panic to the local BB to order a new one. It was a tense ten days waiting for it to arrive.

  • I love Peter Lindbergh’s photography, and that’s such an iconic and influential shoot. What do you hear about model preferences from agents? Any sign of the nepotism trend waning?
