Navaz Batliwalla’s Favorite White Jeans

I’m on the hunt for new white jeans and asked a few of my uber stylish friends to weigh in with their favorites. Second up, Navaz Batliwalla, editor of Disneyrollergirl and author of the best style guide, ever, “The New Garconne- How to be a Modern Gentlewoman.”

“I only have one pair – white Levi’s 501s from a couple of years ago. They’re still white though as they only come out in summer and we rarely get proper summers in London. (We’re having an amazing heatwave right now though…)

I had mine tailored to above the ankle so I wear them with my oxblood Bass Weejuns or battered tan Church’s lace-ups. (No socks; if I’m feeling pasty I use the amazing Nars Monoi Body Glow bronzing oil but keep it well away from the white denim.)

They look great with anything tan or blue. And very simple jewellery – I wear my dad’s rings on a chain.

White 501s aren’t that widely available any more but I also like the look of these cropped cigarette jeans from Madewell.” Navaz

  • Agree with Navaz – I like white jeans that are 100% cotton, and I also like them sized up. The Madewell look really good.

  • Agree with Kathy and Navaz and try to stick with white denim that is either 100% cotton or very close. Current/Elliott make some good options.

  • The quest is never over for a great high waist %100 cotton white jean. I am tall and have a long rise these are my faves…
    Madewell perfect summer jean
Levis Wedgie ( more cream then white… but fabulous ) Got mine at Anthropologie
Mother Hustler ankle fray ( has stretch but fit really well)
    Good luck !!

  • I’ll put in another vote for Gap’s denim, for white jeans — I like the Real Straight, which is almost all cotton, just a little stretch. It’s got a great mid-weight and they’re not too tight, plus classic enough to go with most things in the closet.

  • This summer I replaced my J Crew white jeans with J Brand. They’re mid-rise (better for me since I’m long waisted), skinny, frayed at the ankle, hemmed about 1 1/2 – 2″ above the ankle, not 100% cotton (which I appreciate some stretch as it’s just more flattering for me). Although I dislike skin tight white jeans, I do feel white jeans need to be worn quite trim. Only drawback of this pair – the two front pockets are not real.

  • Thanks Preston! Yes 100% non-stretch all the way please. I need to revisit those Gap ‘Real Straight’s…

  • Gap – Real Straight are amazing. I buy 2 pairs every summer and wear them in heavy rotation until October. They beat much more expensive brands for quality and value for money. They are a classic fit , working with everything from smart brogues with a blazer for a more done look to sandals and a t-shirt all summer long.

  • I bought Gap white jeans 2 years ago desperate for high waisted, boot cut. 100% cotton. Ordered several from Gap in different sizes, found the perfect size white, 100% cotton, high waisted, boot cut . Bought 3 pairs. Will wear them into shreds!
Love white jeans with a crisp linen or cotton shirt and Stuart Weitzman Ballsofire sandals or ecco tennis shoes.

  • A little bit of stretch in jeans can be a good thing in a close fitting jean (like 2% maybe), but the current stretchy material so many makers are using is something I hate and won’t buy!

  • Rag and Bone Capri are my favorite. I have two black pair, but they also have them in white. They are the perfect fit and the only ones I could find that I did not have to shorten by 6 inches. (I am 5′ 4″. They have just enough stretch that they are comfortable, yet hold shape.

  • I agree with Lily that anything in denim with more than 2% stretch begins to look cheap, not to mention too sheer and doesn’t even resemble denim. The reason brands have upped the stretch content in recent years is that the price of cotton skyrocketed. The brands adapted by ‘watering down’ the denim, reducing the cotton, increasing the synthetics and charge just the same – thus increasing their margins per item. Had much less to do with fashion or function or quality, all about cost of production.

  • This is a great post and the comments are even better. I love white jeans all year long (with boots in South Florida) but like white shirts, white jeans are perishable. They stretch out or become dingy over time. They must be traded out for both freshness of style and wear.

  • I went to the Gap based on comments and found the white jeans to not only to be flattering, they are now on sale for $25. Pretty hard to believe. I got two pairs and one for my daughter. Thanks for the great tip!
