Jennifer Ash Rudick’s Favorite White Jeans

Jennifer in Southampton with her daughter Emmy.

I’m on the hunt for new white jeans and asked a few of my uber stylish friends to weigh in with their favorites. Seventh up, Out East author and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Jennifer Ash Rudick:

“Having grown up in Florida, my relationship with white jeans has been long and sometimes sordid. Some had stamina, including basic Levis that saw me through a summer internship at The Norton Museum. Others were poorly thought out, chosen on impulse to fulfill too particular a craving that never translated beyond their circumstance – extremely wide-leg sailor pants purchased in Normandy, France, following an afternoon involving Calvados comes to mind. Throughout the years, I’ve professed ever-lasting love to Lee, Wrangler, Citizens of Humanity, J. Brand, and Helmut Lang. I’ve committed to and eventually grown weary of hip-huggers, high-rise, straight-leg, peg-leg, and super-skinny styles. It was me, not them.

Last Spring, I swore off white jeans for good, buying two overpriced dresses for summer publication parties while on a trip with childhood friends who related to the white pant addiction, “try something more inspired,” they confirmed.” The night of the first book signing, as I slipped on a dress, my husband said, with discernable enthusiasm, “no white jeans for a change?” At that moment, I felt estranged from myself, like an imposter. I retreated to my closet where a brand-new pair of Mother jeans were hidden – just in case.” Jennifer

  • Love this post – so much humor in it too. In LA, white jeans are not that commonly worn, although I’m starting to see it more. I finally found a great pair of 100% cotton ones from Mary B’s post, but I’m afraid to wear them because they’ll get dirty – any tips? Love Jennifer’s all white with your all black – such a great photo.

  • This post proves that white jeans are a classic staple, can be dressed up or down, day or evening. The white top is lovely, would love to know the designer.

  • In reply to Kathy’s comment: I wear white jeans often and I have a dog. Oxi-Clean keeps them white and fresh so wear & enjoy xx

  • Thank you Bea! I will now.

  • These photos are particularly charming! Laundry is simple – The Laundress Stain Solution and Denim Wash/inside out/presoak + delicate cycle/cold-cold/hang dry right side out. Never iron. If something still won’t come out, dot with bleach from your fingertip while still wet, rinse quickly, repeat until it’s gone, followed by a quick wash. And I think Monday is traditionally “wash day.”

  • I don’t usually comment, but this is my favorite post in the “White Jeans Series”. This is how I wear white jeans and will try Mother. The picture on the beach with her daughter is, as Paula said, charming—perfect summer image.

  • Love this post, it’s hilarious. I often buy clothes for the lifestyle I imagine to live, but in reality don’t. I should focus more on clothes that I actually utilize constantly; I love how she put together her white jeans for the book signing.

  • Hi Preston, I too love this series. Your site is the first site I turn to when I need to know what’s in style and to hone my taste . Right now I am struggling with what the focus on a few select pieces might be for fall? For example, my questions are if some of the big trends will continue… such as, are off the shoulder ( I’ve never much cared for this but I’m open), release/ frayed hem jeans here to stay?

While I cannot personally afford the pieces on your shop, it does help train my eye to see the items, it’s really fun.

I know you’ve touched on Fall 2017 some already, I would love a post , if you have the time, on some key piece basics suggestions for fall.

Thank you for your generous spirit in sharing your talented eye:)
