On My Mind

Total Eclipse

My dad made a pinhole projector box for us to view a solar eclipse when I was about five. We were on a family ski trip in Vermont and watched while having a winter picnic at the top of the mountain—memorable, to say the least. We will be home in our garden tomorrow, and since I didn’t buy special glasses (and would be nervous to use them, anyway) I am making my own pinhole projector box—Lord knows I have plenty of shoe boxes…

Happy viewing, everyone!

  • Just did that and watched for a bit with my daughter, was special. I can’t believe how sunny out it still is.

  • We are fortunate to live very close to the line of totality – so a weekend road trip with two couples, involving golf and an overnight stay at our Club cottages (reserved 8 months ago) and a well-stocked cooler, was in order. We combed the countryside to determine our viewing spot a week ago (settled on a public lake and park ground outside a very small town) and left early this morning with our maps of county roads (highways too crowded) and a plan A, B, and C, and enough food and beverages to sustain us in the event of a 48 hour traffic jam. It was fascinating (and a little jarring) to be in a field in the dark at one o’clock in the afternoon. This was like a music festival for science nerds! We met an ‘older’ couple from Ohio who had traveled worldwide for 7 total eclipses, including Egypt, SA, and Africa. So I guess we are just getting started on this journey! Prepare for 2024!!
