Timeless: Twenty Years Later
When this Marie Claire Italia story came out in the October 1998 issue, I tore out every page and pinned them to my inspiration board—I literally thumb-tacked the pages to a cork board over my desk. Twenty years later they are still some of my favorite pictures and the clothes are the epitome of timeless.
As I write this I’m cocooned in sweaters while getting emails announcing that spring/summer merchandise is going on sale. Pre-Fall will be in stores soon. I’d more likely be wearing pieces from the latter right now than the little dresses and sandals being marked down. My point is, like the fall clothes in this story, it’s about buying evergreen items and wearing them even when it’s 50º in May. Truly seasonless dressing.
The stunning Esther Canadas photographed by Jacques Olivar.
These images are beautiful and I remember that model well. The looks are perfect for right now and the only evidence they weren’t taken recently is the cigarette.
This is perfection. Classic, timelless style and beauty. Looks just as fresh today.
Truly timeless. And so chic. There is something to the sleek minimalism of these looks and I’m very happy to see it come back.
Wonderful and very timely post. Last night I made the decision (and realization) that I had to completely replace my core wardrobe due to heavy wear i.e. – good pieces that are beginning to show their age. My top To-Do for the weekend was making my replacement list and getting to it. You just did it for me – thank you!! All I need to do is add an extra shirt and a pencil skirt. Great post – thank you again! And, who can forget Esther Canadas’ wonderful editorial work and her stunning glare in the ‘Thomas Crown Affair’!
Still layering my necklaces in the throat of my shirts !
sooo chic! who styled this?
Would happily wear all that now!
Oh the Thomas Crown Affair. A movie to view over and over again. And Renee Russo. She looked great in every scene. We all recognized this beautiful model immediately. And Ben Gazzara peeping out from the kitchen wearing an apron! Oh my. Pierce Brosnan and that townhouse – these clothes are perfect.
CHIC
I love the timelessness of these styles–as appropriate in the 90’s and 2 decades later. As I get older, I appreciate more and more pieces that are wearable at all ages too. My goal in dressing is now to never have to look back in pictures and wonder “what was I thinking?!” These all fit the bill beautifully!
Totally timeless. And what happened to Esther Canadas? I bet she still looks amazing.
