‘Long Story Short’

When it’s as hot and muggy as it was yesterday and will be again today, I’m tempted to chop off my hair. Then I twist it into a knot or do a simple braid and ride out the heatwave.

Kirsty Hume and Cecilia Chancellor, two of my favorite ’90s models, continue to wear their hair long and it suits them. As hairstylist Sam McKnight says of long locks in July British Vogue, “those days of it being something for the very young are well and truly behind us.”

The hair aside, Kate Phelan’s styling is fabulous—the Hermès look above is going on my inspiration board, pronto.

  • Beautiful! Thanks for the inspiration to forge ahead with growing my hair longer. As a young 60-something, I debate whether or not I have any business trying to pull off longer than shoulder length hair; this story is giving me the “permission” I need to give it a go!

  • I agree that all the women shown look great with their long hair, and I agree that the idea that one has to maintain short hair after a certain age is passe. That being said, however, I see a lot of women past 60 who I think need a style update. Long hair can look very dowdy on a mature woman, in my opinion. Like anything, one has to assess themselves overall and ask if they are putting their best self forward wearing their hair a certain way.

  • These women are stunning. When I see certain fashion or beauty trends on the runway or in an editorial spread I have to remind myself that the person wearing this look is a physically gifted professional that would look amazing in just about anything. Whether it works for me is a whole other story!

  • That first photo is also going into the vault for further reference (I refuse to think about autumn in June). I am trying to continue growing my curly hair longer but after a certain age, sigh, it doesn’t always cooperate. Love these two.

  • I’m neutral on the hair length – all I know is it makes me look old and tired. Not to mention, that much more to color! But the turtleneck sweater, pants, and leather jacket in top photo is my dream come true!

  • I believe both women are wearing hair extensions – both for volume and length. It’s fine, but the truth is that most women after a certain age, just don’t have this kind of hair. That being said, I think women should wear their hair however they feel comfortable, whether others think it’s the most becoming, or not.

  • Kristy is 41. Cecelia is 51. Neither are that old! I am 67, and my hair is longer now than it has been for 25 years…about armpit length. I am enjoying it and it looks good…if it looked dowdy I’d do something about it. I style it and have it colored. I will probably not go more than another 2 inches, and I can always put it up.

    Not everyone needs extensions as they age! ;-}

  • I have had ‘armpit’ length hair since some disastrous shorter haircuts in my teens! I am now between the age of the above models with fine hair. I have some balayage and a blow dry every 3-4 days. I don’t even think about long hair and age. Maybe it’s my Indian heritage where older women don’t have short hair!

  • Our First Lady certainly sets a beautiful example for wearing long hair. Same with our UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley. Two stunning, modern women over 40 in the public eye with long hair.
