On My Mind

The Belt Bag Worn Crossbody?

I’m going to pause the ladylike earrings conversation for just a moment and shift to belt bags worn crossbody (as seen in yesterday’s post). I loved the belt bag (or bum bag as we fondly referred to it in the ’90s) the first time around and embraced it again when it resurfaced a few seasons ago—it’s just so practical. Wearing it crossbody modernizes the oft derided bag and my eye has adjusted to the look.

  • Not for me, but the picture above looks good. I’ve seen some where the strap is way too short, and it looks like the wearer is in a tight harness…that is not a good look.

  • I have a secret hankering for one of these (I guess not so secret now)

  • I like the look, but I don’t think I could carry it off…I couldn’t fit all that I need into those small pockets!

  • No, just no. Not cross-body and not a belt bag. Either way I think they cut your body off in a bad way. And IMHO, they are just not grown-up or elegant.

  • Too trendy for the over 30

  • I view this as the sort of accessory that clutters up women’s lives and closets. And in a short time, left wondering why they spent the money and which re-sale shop to donate it to. : )

  • Very silly. Looks, and probably is, extremely uncomfortable. What happens when you actually need something out of those tiny little pockets and you’re strapped into that harness?

  • I like this way to wear my fanny/bum bags. It gives more control for security and looks fresh.

  • it looks great on teenagers and 20 somethings. Otherwise, it’a another trend that will disappear in a blink

  • I love it worn this way. It’s perfect for summer when you need to run out the door with just the bare essentials or for dog walking. My cute summer t-shirt dresses don’t have pockets, and sometimes a purse is just overkill for the weekend.

  • My two favorites include an 80s era Hermès belt bag — very chic, but worn on the waist. My favorite sporty one is a really simple one by Dakine, which I removed all labels from to be super understated and more versatile. Looks great crossbody. Youthful and modern.

  • It seems like a look designed for Instagram, not real life. I also think it would be uncomfortable and unflattering for ladies with any more than a tiny chest. Instead of a fanny pack, a boob bag?

  • The Row has a good one for pre-order at Barneys.

  • Hi, I find that I now scan the comments for Paula’s reaction as much as I check the blog for Preston’s posts. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy both of you. Thanks for the style inspiration. Sandie

  • Not for me. Why not a crossbosy camera bag? Sleeker and more chic to me and it will be a look that lasts.

  • I resisted this look until I couldn’t resist any longer and now I love it! It’s perfect for when you don’t want to be encumbered by a purse and it’s all in how you wear it that keeps it looking fresh and chic. I questioned myself for purchasing it initially but once I tried it, I found it works! It holds my iPhone 8, a small coin purse and credit card. I prefer it on my waist and the bag off center but it also works worn crossbody. BTW, i’m in my late 60s.
