The Classic Pump

Last week I posted on a midi-length, black satin skirt that I paired with boots and strappy sandals. Neither shoe would work for a meeting tomorrow, however, both have a low (kittenish) heel and that got me thinking. I can’t believe that I’m writing this but, after 6 years, I need an alternative to block-heeled pumps — Lord knows I have a number of them.

My obsession with the block heel started with the Valentino Tango in 2012 — I bought 3 pairs. Then came the Gucci Marmont (2 pairs), the Chanel slingback and Chloé Perry followed. I still love and wear them all, especially with jeans while running around, but it’s time to shake up my shoe choices.

Not only does the kitten heel feel fresh, the classic pump, in any heel height, is back on my radar. Thankfully, there are many to choose from.

Jimmy Choo above and more Jimmy Choo here, Manolo Blahnik BB here and here,  Prada and here.

  • There’s a reason we call these pumps “classic” – we never really stop wearing them, do we? They may get shoved towards the back of our closets, but eventually they work their way to the front again because – let’s face it – they are always in style.

  • For me the classic heel pump has never gone out. I have that exact pair of Jimmy Choo pumps and in any dressy situation they are my go to. As you know Classic is Queen.
On a side not, Preston I want to thank you. I was in need of a low heeled black sandal. Ended of getting a finding a classic pair of block heel Manolo’s on (the magic word) SALE. When they arrived, they looked beautiful, but fit was not perfect for my foot. I debated all of those things, well, I love them, well they are sale, well they are Manolos. Finally, I asked WWPD, what would Preston do? She would let them go because they were not right and she would continue to search for the right ones.
So thank you Preston. And can you start a column WWPD?
I am sure we all would keep you very busy!

  • I was at an event last night and two of the chicest women there had on very low black kitten heels. They look right again, and think I will be giving my block heel pumps a little rest (though they are great for long days at work and zipping through airports).

  • A few months ago I found a pair of low heeled classic Blahniks on sale and thought to myself how these would never be a mistake to own. Thank you for confirming my good decision. I love Yasmin’s suggestion. I’m available as an intern if you’re interested in expanding your empire!

  • Hurray for the kitten heel!! I am a fan of Manolo Blahnik “Carolyn”. The kitten heel slingback is so perfect this time of year. I love wearing them as they feel a bit more refined than the block heel. They also seem to be the preferred shoe of LSD, she is often photographed wearing a slingback shoe with jeans and dresses.

  • I have quite a collection of Manolo Blahnik and Prada pumps (from kitten heels to mid heel) from my corporate finance days. They are all about 10 years old. Timeless and well made shoes are a true investment

  • Great post and perfect timing, too! I don’t work for Shopbop or know anyone over there, but they have a few black pumps on sale right now.

  • I love the shoe, but not so much with that skirts, I love them with jeans and slacks. I’d prefer a refined flat for that skirt.

  • Cheryl,
Hoe do you keep the Carolyne on your heel? Mine always slide off and they end up being worn as mules.

  • I agree the block heel is a bit more casual and more every day. I like the kitten heel, it has an elegance and refinement coupled with being wearable in business. What I like most is having the option to wear either of them and be considered stylish, not passe. Like skirt lengths, let there be multiple shoe styles concurrently in vogue.

  • Well said Ladies, and Esp. April, yes yes! Preston as always, you’ve hit the nail on the head.

  • Love a kitten heel and Emmanuelle Alt nails it.
