‘A Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi’

“What makes the French so chic?” queries British Vogue in this story on actor Isabelle Huppert. Elegant understatement gets my vote and Ms. Huppert certainly embodies this theory — especially with Venetia Scott’s styling and photography. The life-long Parisienne’s sage advice on getting dressed: trust your instinct, dress for yourself, and always leave something to the imagination — well said.

The bold red lip is on my radar…

  • I got enticed by red lipstick in photos, but IRL it doesn’t really work on me. I only wear on occasion for a photo.

  • European women have that little something that American women just don’t have!

  • I am a New Yorker who has lived in France for thirty five years and I can say that Isabelle Huppert is one of the chicest women in France and one of the best actresses of her generation, anywhere. I guess when it comes to fashion French women believe in restraint , simplicity and they don’t care what anyone else is doing.

  • Excited to see your post featuring one of my favorite actors. Never mind French girl cool, Isabelle Huppert is the epitome of a French woman, confident and certain about who she is. If you haven’t seen her in the movie Elle, do.

  • @Kathy I’m the same! My solution is lip balm, then dab on the lipstick, blot into a stain and then lip gloss on top for a subtle red that doesn’t look severe!

  • I love everything about this feature, right down to the wall paint! I wish I could see more of the dress at bottom – hooray for short sleeves + the color is exquisite! Although I haven’t made a research project out of it, French women and men carry a more relaxed approach to every aspect of their life, including dressing. For better or worse, Americans live a more ordered, sometimes overdrive, to-do-list life which, although it makes for a highly productive society and results in huge accomplishments, it also comes through in our appearance, in how we approach personal grooming, and how we dress. But it can’t hurt to keep trying!
