Tomboy Chic: The Penny Loafer

A longtime Belgian Shoe fanatic, my beloved black calf pair finally bit the dust. At the same time, I tired of my well-worn horsebit loafer slides that were all the rage a few years ago. While I was pulling product for a recent sale post, I spied these loafers from a collaboration between RE/DONE + Weejuns and immediately clicked “buy”. My friend collects vintage Bass Weejuns and now I know why — they epitomize classic, understated style with a tomboy vibe — I’m obsessed.

  • Love the Weejuns. They go with everything. I think of them as the more tailored/boyfriend style ballerina.

  • I can’t believe you’ve never worn Bass, Preston! What were you wearing in your teens? They were a bit of a thing in my school (Americana was huge in the uk) but I’ve never got on board with the modern version. I buy desdstock as the instep seems slightly deeper. Would be interested to know what your friend thinks.

  • Navaz, I know that you collect them, you are my “friend” 😉 I lived in LL Bean camp moccasins and Tretorns as a teen.

  • Truly timeless. How is the break in period?

  • I remember my first pair…navy scotchgrain. My mother wouldn’t buy me Weegens until my feet “stopped” growing. They were size 6 1/2. More than 50 years later, I’m a 7 1/2! Loved my Weegens!

  • How do the Redone version compare to the regular Bass ones. The redone are sold out in my size. 🙁

  • Someone stole my first pair of Weejuns (yes really). Maybe it’s finally time to replace them…

  • The Re/Done site no longer had my size, so I went to the Weejuns site and oh my – they have expanded their styles since I last had them in high school. I’m kind of partial to the ones with the bow – the Lillan and the Esther. Thanks for putting this on my radar, love a beautiful crafted classic shoe.
