On My Mind

Play With Me

Now that my kids are older and my husband and I need “things” like we need holes in our heads, our preferred presents are experiences.

Recently LVMH bought Belmond (luxury hotels, trains, river cruises, and safaris) and Michelin acquired Tablet (boutique hotels) to be the star in the Michelin experiences portfolio. Both acquisitions signal a focus on experiential travel. When my girls come home I love exploring with them — checking out new restaurants, exhibitions, places, and playing lots of games — doing is the new consuming.

Thank you Verdura for the gorgeous playing cards, they will be used a lot next week.

  • First off Congratulations on the acquisition! Secondly, could not agree more with you on the experience-based enjoyment in life. That has been the core of my family’s pleasure all my life; however, it was a difficult merger in marriage when others lean on consumption. Thankfully age has driven some change and now game playing, exploring, museums, nature have worked their way back into our daily lives with ease. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

  • “Doing is the new consuming…..” doing for each other, doing for another……my sentiments exactly!!

Merry, merry and thank you, Preston, for all your good cheer throughout the year!

  • I love this – doing is the new consuming! Experiences live on while “things” lose their luster far too quickly. Less is more and live like you mean it! Cheers!

  • Congratulations on the acquisition! What’s next for your entrepreneurial family?

    Merry Christmas, Preston.

  • Could not have expressed these sentiments better. Love “doing is the new consuming.” Doing just that this holiday season, and hopefully on into 2019 and beyond. Merry Merry!

  • Merry Christmas and thank you for sharing another year of wonderful posts! Would love to know which family games you recommend.

  • Congratulations on this wonderful success – so much to be proud of!
We are a Scrabble family. It goes on for hours, not quite as intense as chess, a game we can talk over. Having taken many slides over the years (dating myself here), we get out the projector and screen, turn out the lights and show “home movies.” The cell phone is fine for incidentals, but everyone should have a decent camera, and there are many good ones, for permanent photographs. We gave our kids cameras post college, and they both travel with them now.
    A game table would be a worthwhile purchase . . . consuming while doing? : )
Wishing you and your wonderful readers the merriest of Christmases and a joyous New Year!

  • Somehow of my most vivid memories of Christmas growing up are the hours of games with my extended family and Paula my grandparents had at least two games tables, so it’s a tradition we carry on to this day. Christmas Eve is whatever my kids choose and next evening is for nickel poker (with the same revolving chip set that was my grandpa’s, swear I can still smell his pipe).
Merriest of holidays Preston, all the best to your beautiful family and thank you for another year of gorgeous images, interesting discussions and thoughtful ideas. ❤️

  • My sentiments exactly. My boys are similar in age to your girls and we’re in the same boat with gift giving. Travel and concerts are what we are looking forward to. Congratulations on the acquisition too! Exciting times.

  • Thank you for all the sweet comments. I’m very proud of my husband and his co-founder, they are proof that having a vision, conviction, hard work, and patience (18 years) can lead to success. Now Tablet will be even better, without compromising its soul.

    PrestonDecember 21st, 2018  3:54 PM

  • Preston, I am definitely passing your message along to my daughter, as she is striking out on her own. I admire the pioneer spirit!
And SueM has reminded me of a sweet memory, that of the smell of pipes – both my grandfathers!
