Pin-Up

A ponytail is my default hair style, but it’s annoying when driving and can put a lot of stress on my hairline. Barrettes solve these problems and I have a sizable collection. One of my favs is this tortoise circle by La-ta-da, which is sold at Target (J. Crew has a larger version), and Amazon has a terrific selection of bar barrettes in all sizes. Years ago I had a brass circle by Céline, but it was so heavy it just slipped out of my hair. I’ve just ordered this clip by Charlotte Chesnais and hopefully it will stay put.

  • I love the look of a barrette in long hair, or even pinning back the bangs of a long bob. We wore them constantly as kids. But I’ve noticed that on the east coast of Canada where I grew up we pronounced them BAR-ettes with the emphasis on the first syllable. And that pronunciation is not universal. How do you pronounce the word in your neck of the woods?

  • Thanks for the reminder; a barrette is a nicely pulled together look. I love your choices. Another great spot to pick them up is at a local pharmacy. My favorite for hair accessories is Zitomer’s Pharmacy on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. They have an extraordinary selection.

  • Wondering if Alexandre de Paris is still open on upper Madison Avenue? It was a charming tiny boutique full of hair accessories where I always stopped to pick up tortoiselle barettes and combs for my daughter every time in New York.

  • I’ve worn my hair up for years…it’s fine, but there’s a lot of it. Like your experience with the brass celine barrette, anything too heavy will slip out and puts too much stress on my scalp. I have a favorite J. Crew tortoise clasp in my bowl full of barrettes and have found most France Luxe clips to work the best. There’s a large selection of styles/textures/colors to look at on their on-line shop.
