Double Cleansing
In a moment of synchronicity, my friend Liz asked if I practice “double cleansing”, a topic I’ve been meaning to post on. The Westman Atelier foundation is great, but I’ve had a devil of a time getting it off. This is what inspired me to try a two-step skincare routine that starts with Bioderma Sensibio H2O (a light oil cleanser is good, too). Followed with either Omorovicza Cleansing Foam or Embryolisse Lait-Crème Moussant does the trick.

I’m in the oil cleanser camp! (Muji do a good affordable one and Bobbi brown has a nice fancier one. i’m desperate to try the Tom Ford one too!) And then a foaming one after.
The Bioderma also works great when you want to remove and refresh makeup midday or evening without a full face wash. Or post workout when you’re on the go. As with all micellar waters, you don’t need to rinse.
Been using Bioderma and Embryolisse for years and love ithem. Work together so well and I love the way Embryolisse smells. For cleansing, I use Oskia’s Renaissance Cleansing Gel.
I use the Bioderma. Curious why you use a second one after that?
Thank you for the tip. This may be my solution for mid day Pilates and then a meeting or two.
Loved your synchronous post, Preston! Friends have been asking my daughter about her skin care regimen since she started double cleansing. She and I both use Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil before washing with another cleanser. The oil pulls out make-up, pollution etc. in a moisturizing way before the other cleanser is used. This article from Allure has more info about double cleansing, a foundational component of K-beauty routines: https://www.allure.com/story/what-is-double-cleansing
Preston, I double cleanse with the Bioderma micelles water (yes love fragrance) but I do it reversed. First I cleanse with a good foam and then finish with the Bioderma as it doubles as a cleanser and toner …. makes my skin feel great.
I was just in Paris at CityPharma, looking to pick up a bottle of Bioderma, when one of their beautician/salespeople asked to help me. I asked where the Bioderma was; she took a look at my face, gently diagnosed me with dry skin (which is true, and I’m wrinkled too, being 51 years of age) and steered me clear of it. She told me I needed a cleansing oil.
I am not sure about double-cleansing unless one is wearing a ton of makeup. All recent research shows we need some ‘dirt’ to build up our immune system. Also double cleansing strips the skin of healthy bacteria.
I double cleanse with Koh Gen Doh Cleansing Water followed by Tatcha Camellia Oil Cleanser. KGD gently removes all eye and face makeup, while the Tatcha oil cleans up all the rest, including stubborn mascara. Keeps my dry, sensitive skin feeling soft and moist. I recently added the Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum and Rich Face Cream for my best skin ever!
Day to day, I wear very little, if any, make up, so I don’t double cleanse. I really love and enjoy is my skin care regimen. Products today are such a pleasure to use! I change it up from day to evening and according to season. Basically, it goes like this: Estee Lauder eye make up remover, cleanse with either La Mer or Image Vitamin C, Rose Water as toner, hyalaraunic serum for day or Lauder Advanced Night Repair in pm, a few drops oil (I rotate between three French lines because I love them all), and select my moisturizer/sunscreen depending on am/pm/dryness/weather. I also use a gentle enzyme exfoliating mask about 2x week. Something new I’ve added to my winter manicures and pedicures is exfoliation and frequent paraffin dip – this combination keeps my hands and cuticles in good shape.
I use Bioderma followed by Donell Cream Wash. Skin feels clean and soft.
P50!!!! You’d be amazed at what
Comes off on the little pad with p50. I swear by biologique products.
PS: my old school hack for heavy makeup or sunblock is to use a wash cloth with my cleanser. Cheap, and effective.
Drifting into a new topic now . . . washcloths! I agree with Julie – I use washcloths daily, at the sink and in the shower – 100% white cotton terrycloth with a white poplin scallop edge, Leontine Linens, so pretty in the bathroom! Order by the dozen. Simple pleasures! : ))
I swear by Bioderma for my evening cleanser or anytime makeup remover. As I’ve gotten older, my skin is increasingly sensitive, so I use the Sensibio. In the morning I use Peet Rivko Gentle Cleanser followed by their facial oil and moisturizer. It took years of searching to discover the “less is plenty” approach.
