“The Dutch House”

Ann Patchett’s new novel “The Dutch House” is out tomorrow (now, today) — woo hoo! “Commonwealth” is one of my favorite books.

Sadly, Richard Russo’s “Chances Are” left me cold and a few friends didn’t even finish it — maybe you need to be a late middle-aged guy to get it, but I’m not so sure. I’m midway through “The Most Fun We Ever Had” by Claire Lombardo, a fantastic read.

  • Can’t wait…I went to the bookstore today to buy it, but yes, out tomorrow. David didn’t like “Chances Are” and loves everything by Russo, and fits into the demographic you described. Neither of us finished it. Love the cover of the Ann Patchett book too.

  • I love all of your posts, but I especially look forward to your book recommendations. I was new to Richard Russo when you posted about Chances Are, and chose Nobody’s Fool as my first read. Absolutely loved it! I can’t stop thinking about the characters long after the book is over.

I just started Olive Kitteridge (for the first time) after hearing all of the hype for Olive, Again. Please keep the book recommendations coming!

  • I read “Chances Are” after you posted about it. I did finish it, but found it sorely disappointing, and kept wondering how different his Pulitzer winning book must have been. I also cannot wait to read Ann Patchett’s latest. I have loved every one of her books, including Run, which came out a long time ago but I only recently discovered. The Most Fun…is really good. I also recommend Ask Again, Yes.

  • I just started to read “Chances Are” last night, and I am finding the first few chapters tough to follow, I am going to give it a try as my subway read!

I loved the New Girl and Inheritance!

Thank you, everyone, for sharing your favorites!

  • So excited!
Did you see the NYT article on Ann in last week’s NYT?
    I love her bookstore.
    Have a super day.

  • The Most Fun We Ever Head is a beautiful book. So well written. I attempted to read City of Girls afterwards, absolutely abysmal – the contrast was stark!

  • Oh I loved The Most Fun We Ever Had! That, along with Ask Again, Yes, are two of the best books I have read this year. I can’t wait to read The Dutch House, too. Happy reading!
