On my mind

False Start

“And it isn’t even Mercury Retrograde” said my daughter when I explained why I was in NYC and not London. While driving to JFK in a nor’easter last evening I should have foreseen that things would go from bad to worse… Surprisingly, the flight was on time, but then an engine blew on takeoff and we were subsequently grounded smack in the middle of the runway until 2 am. Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.

However, I did pack for London. After a post on my meagre Paris packing list — the same clothes I wear every day at home — it was time for a shake up. For this quick trip I challenged myself to include a few of my favorite pieces that I stupidly “save”. In a 2015 post I swore that I would stop doing this, but some habits are hard to break.

So, I pulled out a carefully stored black polished calfskin Marni Trunk, a rarely-out-of-the-garment-bag Bottega Veneta trench, and a gold Tank watch that hasn’t seen the light of day in ages.  Black jeans, a black sweater, and these waterproof boots (with black laces) completed my inflight outfit. The Trunk is phenomenal for traveling, it can be worn any length and the compartments keep me organized.

  • So sorry about your trip! I also “save” purchases for events that never happen. Trying not to do that! Makes no sense. Love your choices. Love that trench!

  • Oh no! I hope you were able to reschedule Preston and no matter what, keep that beautiful bag in rotation. The trench would have been perfect for today I bet. ❤️

  • The handbag looks fantastic – can you fill me in on why it is called a trunk? At a glimpse, it reminds me a little of a Mark Cross – are they similar? The BV trench coat is truly special – unlike many designer coats, it has a couture look worthy of its price.

  • Who blew the engine on take off? BA? What kind of plane?

    M. Kirk OkayOctober 18th, 2019  12:14 AM

  • Oh dear! At least you were on the runway and managed to return home to your own bed ! Anyway, do hope you are back on track for London.
Theses days, I try to acquire clothing that I will wear within the next twenty four hours, if I do that then the item is really incorporated into the wardrobe.

  • An engine compressor blew from the extreme wind. It’s complicated, had to do with a runway being closed so we took off not heading into the wind but with the wind perpendicular to the plane. This cut off the air from the engine. Great pilot.

    PrestonOctober 18th, 2019  6:15 AM

  • I do not know why it’s called Trunk, and it is very similar to the Mark Cross Downtown.

  • Love each piece you’ve shown, and I’ve got to break my same habit of “saving” things….What Claire said is so true about wearing or using something new immediately – it sort of breaks the spell. Right now in LA it’s still so hot that my fall purchases are still sitting unworn.

  • Great thoughts on the “saving” dilemma . Hope you are able to reschedule. And , thankfully, you had a great book with you!

  • My mother was a saver. Me, on the other hand not so. Glad you are ok from the incident at the airport!

    TracyOctober 18th, 2019  10:04 AM

  • I have often self-criticized my habit of “saving” clothing and accessories. I know I got this attitude from my mom, and I suspect it might have been born in her from living through the Depression and the never ending insecurity of that experience. It makes no sense, especially since I am not hard on clothes and buy good quality, Its not likely I will wear them out, lol. l Love knowing I’m not alone in this regard, and agree there is no time like the present. I also second Claire’s idea, its a good one!

  • Thank God you are ok! i’m not enjoying airports and flying lately, it used to be more fun

    SharonOctober 18th, 2019  3:39 PM

  • The Eddie Bauer boots are half off right now on their site, and I ordered them in the same color for an upcoming winter trip to Geneva. Your shoe picks are always spot-on! Thank you!
