Leather Leggings

Karene Katz Inspired

An ancient pair of beloved leather leggings with stretched out knees are atop my things-to-replace pile. I keep trying other shapes — straight-leg and track style — but a simple legging is best on me and for how I wear them.

My friend Karene, The Row’s fit model for years, has a number of leather pants and The Row’s Moto Stretch-Leather Leggings are her favorite. “They are part of the Essentials line that you can find year-round along with certain sweaters and T-shirts. The Row are very on top of their fit so you know if you reorder a pant you will get the same thing even 2 years later.” — a concept I love.

The Row’s leggings, which never go on sale, are marked down at Barneys.

  • Your friend Karene is gorgeous. Her entire look is so classic and beautiful. Any idea her height/ weight /size she wears in the leggings? Or what size you usually take Preston? How much do they stretch?
Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and all of your readers!

  • I love the Row leggings! I have a pair and been wearing for years! I would pay full price and not buy on sale at Barneys unless I was sure of the size because I don’t think Barney’s is taking returns!!!

  • Ah ha! So she’s the one you said had on the good leather leggings at the book club!

    TracyNovember 25th, 2019  10:45 AM

  • I am 5’8 1/4 In height. In the leggings I take a size 4 and I believe they can be fairly easily shortened. You should be able to wiggle into them comfortably but they should be ‘ tightish’. They do not stretch out and lose their shape because they are a great quality but if you feel they do just stick them in the freezer overnight.

  • Thank You for the compliment Yasmin! I agree Paula. I would pay full price for a new pair again as well. These babies have amortized themselves they have gotten so much wear. I took a year and a half off to have a baby and now that my clothes fit again the leggings are as chic and current as they were when I bought them and are one of my favorite wardrobe staples. When I worked for The Row they would have me test wear the leggings for a few days as well to see how they wear. The Row really has a great quality product.

  • I can’t wait to get…often pull ons without a zipper can, after several wearings sag in butt, do these retain their shape? Thx for sharing your experience.

    LynnNovember 25th, 2019  12:37 PM

  • Hi!
Also want to know about butt sagging! Would they get wet in freezer?

    DebbieNovember 25th, 2019  12:53 PM

  • So agree about buying good quality leather… or even vegan leather. I have a straight leg pair of good leather pants, not leggings, that I bought at Holt Renfrew here in Canada years ago. And they just keep on keeping on. Unlike the cheap ones. So since I don’t need new leather pants… I’m coveting that sweater. Any info about that?

  • Preston, I’m happy to hear you still favor the classic legging shape for leather pants. I’ve tried cropped and track styles and just don’t feel they have the versatility or classicism of leggings. I love The Row in leather and suede but Joseph and Helmut Lang have worked well for me, too. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

  • This whole look is impossibly chic! May I ask where the boots are ftom? They have the most perfect elegant yet chunky look.

    LaraNovember 25th, 2019  3:15 PM

  • Lynn, mine have retained their shape. They also have these cute seams on the bum, they are small but for whatever reason I feel like they really make your butt look cute. I have not seen them on other pants. These are also a really expensive bonded stretch leather and they are baby soft so I think this could be part of why they wear so well. I am sure it differs from brand to brand.
I have to make one corrected . I did a little research and while putting leather in the freezer is good for killing odor and freshening. There is no proof that the pants will come back. I am sorry for that misinformation.

  • Do you know whose sweater she’s wearing?

    Marilyn BrockwayNovember 25th, 2019  3:59 PM

  • The sweater is an old Adam Lippes. They do some beautiful knits. The boots are old Fendi.

    Karene KatzNovember 25th, 2019  5:53 PM

  • Thank you, Karene!
A nice saleswoman at Saks once suggested that I dab a damp cloth on the leather to retain their shape. Too nervous to try that.

  • This is a fascinating conversation! I think there are two categories of women – leather legging women and suede jean women. Although I fall into the suede camp, I always admire women who can rock leather pants/leggings/ jackets. Hermes has always shown a lot of leather. Both suede and leather have staying power.

    PaulaNovember 26th, 2019  12:40 AM

  • I need legs like Karene to wear these leggings! On another note, I steam my leather leggings and trousers. I feel at the very least, it gets rid of the wrinkles.

    MMSNovember 26th, 2019  3:51 AM

  • I’m curious how warm leather leggings are? I don’t see them in Los Angeles – so maybe they’re too warm.
@Paula – yes, Hermes started as a harness company, so it’s no coincidence that they’ve always shown a lot of leather and suede.

    KathyNovember 26th, 2019  11:16 AM

  • Thx Karene. Great info. Lynn

    LynnNovember 26th, 2019  7:13 PM

  • You look great! Maybe you should consider a pair of “vegan” ones from Aritizia. Someone recommended them to me and they are awesome. Eco-friendly and don’t stretch out. Plus, they look good after numerous wears.
    : )
