On My Mind

Mother of the Bride Dress

A longtime reader asked for mother of the bride dress suggestions, so I thought I’d put it out there. I offered my navy Patou but she doesn’t want to wear a gown to her daughter’s afternoon wedding in late May. I love this Valentino (too mumsy?) or an ARoss Girl x Soler dress would be really pretty.

  • Lovely suggestions. What are the brides and bridesmaids/groom colors?

  • With the popularity of midi-length it’s a good time to find the perfect dress. The ARoss Girl is one you’d wear for years to come without looking “mumsy”.

  • Alice Walk makes some lovely custom MOB frocks that would sing at an afternoon wedding and be worn many times thereafter. Check out alicewalk.com.
And congrats on the happy occasion!

  • My stepson is getting married in November…I was asked to wear navy along with his mother and the bride’s mother (I’ve been married to his father for 16 years). I wore navy to my older son’s wedding 17 years ago…I want to try to get in that dress although I doubt that I will wear it. I was end-of-long-marriage thin back then…

  • First of all, congratulations to your friend. I have been on the same hunt for months (daughters summer wedding) and found some wonderful options from Simone Rocha, Self Portrait and Marie Saint Pierre (proud Canadian) but then everything went sideways when my father became terminally ill AND my daughter fell pregnant. We are now having an evening cocktail event wedding at the end of February in the middle of an art museum because she’s determined to wear her beautiful dress and we’re all feeling reckless (not sure if that’s the right word) and free. I’ve decided on a Paul and Joe black velvet blazer with YSL velvet pants. My sisters are on-board. Wear what makes you feel beautiful and chic.

  • What a gift to have Preston and her lovely readers weigh in on this! I am humbled and grateful for such an enthusiastic response. Who knew not being the focus of an event could be the most challenging shopping dilemma?! (Shopping with my daughter for her gown was a dream and a delight!).
To SueM, I applaud your spirit and ability to shift gears on the fly. Life throws us curve balls and the most chic women roll with the punches. My prayers for your father, and best wishes to you all for a beautiful wedding celebration. Thrilled your daughter is going to wear her dress!! : ))
    Thanks so much, Preston!!

  • Your navy Patou is perfection too bad your friend doesn’t want a gown . SueM with her wonderful resilient spirit said it perfectly wear what makes you feel beautiful and chic . I tucked a fitted white cotton Alaïa shirt into pearl embroidered navy Dries palazzo pants for my daughters summer wedding
I wore a long black ruffled silk Alaïa skirt and and white eyelet shirt and wide white Alaïa belt to my son’s . I like the A Ross dresses but I might add a more structured belt !

  • The Patou gown was made for a winter ball and the wool crepe would be too heavy for a late May wedding.I didn’t consider that when I offered it…

  • My son is getting married in a week! I was dress shopping in the midst of a long illness (nothing tragic) . I shopped on line for months buying and returning until I settled on a beautiful fuchsia Talbot Runhof. The wedding is in a garden in FL. so my customary black was not an option. The tailor kept commenting on how well it was made. Congratulations! Feeling comfortable and beautiful is priority #1
