On My Mind

Shopping My Closet

There are some super closet clean-out tutorials in the blogosphere right now.  My approach is to edit when I pull out the next season’s clothes. Swimsuits that have lost a bit of their stretch, too short shorts, yellowed T-shirts, etc. get the heave-ho.

Instead of a closet overhaul, I have challenged myself to wear items that only see the light of day once in a blue moon.  And by doing so, I’ve fallen in love, again, with things that I already own. I’m looking pretty sharp on the Whole Foods runs…

I never saw my mother in yoga pants outside of an exercise class, and she always wore lipstick, even in a Nor’easter.  I’m taking a page out of her book, helps keep my spirits up.

  • Love this. My grandmother never left the house without a heel. 1-2 in heel. Always had style…. great idea.

  • A great idea since we seem to be on a shopping pause in the current climate! I imagine you discovered all sorts of buried treasure packing for a move! My closet cleanse has even revealed some super comfy clothes like old Donna Karan cashmere leggings and sweatpants that I’d forgotten about which are perfect for NOW paired with my socks and Birkenstock’s. Your finds are perfect, Preston and I’ve no doubt you are the chicest shopper at Whole Foods!

  • Ditto here. I have been pulling looks off of Instagram and recreating with what I have in my closet. Maybe I will start posting…nothing else going on…
Thank you for continuing to inspire during a Pandemic…❤️

  • Thank you for recommending the closet clean-out series on The Flair Index last week, it’s wonderful.

  • Honestly, it feels great to discover classics in the back of the closet. I’m supporting our local shops in any way possible. While I love fashion, right now it seems more important than ever to give these small businesses a hand. I’m getting dressed daily for my Zoom calls and the occasional grocery run.I’m reworking my wardrobe and really discovering where the gaps are and will fill in when this is over. Stay in and be well everyone!

  • I’d like to shop your closet too, Preston! Love all the items shown.

  • My 17 year old daughter breezed out the door this morning on her daily drive-thru approved coffee run in a striped turtleneck, black shorts, hair pulled back in a low ponytail with navy velvet bow. I couldn’t be more proud!

  • Here in London, I am going through wearing a different pair of jeans and sweaters everyday (and then repeat) to ‘check’ if there are any items that I don’t end up wearing. It’s a good way to go through my end winter/early spring wardrobe and donate or sell unworn items once we are out of lockdown. I haven’t managed to wear any nice accessories on our weekly run to the supermarket though!

  • Likewise, I never saw your mother in yoga or without lipstick! She is/was always a lady of class. She is missed!!
