On My Radar

Maine State of Mind

I have Maine on the brain, it’s one of my favorite places on the planet. Last week a reader tipped me off about the fantastic totes and ditty bags from Lincolnville-based Canvas Bag Machine, then my friend recommended the fresh, seasonal seafood from Downeast Dayboat and sent me blueberry pie cookies from Portland Cake Company — yum! A late summer road trip up the coast is a beautiful thing.

  • I have Maine on the brain too! We travel to the US once a year, every time is a new destination. Last time I fell in love with Carmel-by-the-sea but deeply in my heart, I feel that this part of your country would be my favourite. I follow an IG account which publishes amazing pics from all the smaller and bigger towns, lots of spectacular nature and of course, preppy look. Just love it!

  • Maine is the summer-camp-for-life state! My daughter’s camp of her youth cheerfully announced they have opened camp for 110 years straight, and they are not about to stop now! Hallelujah for courage! This is a camp that carried on during WWII, TB, and polio epidemics. During the Swine flu epidemic, when some girls came down sick, they weathered it at camp and earned special badges to commemorate it. Those Wo girls are tough cookies.

  • Maine has been my happy place for the last 25+ years! It is our collective family yawp as we cross the Piscataqua bridge and see that sign, “Welcome to Maine!” , that has me nostalgic.
My husband is a 6th generation Mainer and though, codgerism and plain language are its stock and trade, it’s the ease of life that we all flock to. The low requirement for artifice and complete disdain for pomp & circumstance is lockstep with how we’ve been living these last months. Not to mention a yearning for the great outdoors! We sadly may opt out this summer season in deep consideration for my elderly In-laws but there’s still hope. Crossing our fingers for August.

  • I’m so happy to hear your friend turned you on to Downeast Dayboat, and that they sent you a bit of blueberry pie cookie love from Portland Cake Company. A lot of my customers have been sending seafood and sweet treat packages to friends across the country. Right now people are looking for security and safety and the pure simplicity of a Maine care package really hits the mark. FYI I start shipping again next week, this time with halibut. Thanks for the shoutout.

  • While I’ve never been to Maine, you had me with the canvas bags and blueberry hand pies.
