‘Why I Don’t Write: And Other Stories’

Susan Minot’s ‘Monkeys’ and ‘Evening‘ are two books that I’ve reread a number of times. I didn’t realize that she’d published ‘Why I Don’t Write: And Other Stories’ until my brilliant friend and @LocustValleyBookstore owner, Lisa Scully, alerted me to it this morning. This book will jump to the top of my considerable to-read list.

  • I’ve never had the patience for short stories. But, with the pandemic and a very shortened attention span, now seems like a good time to try again and this book seems worthwhile. Thank you!

  • Just read the blurb for all three books on Amazon. Right up my reading street, I should think. Thanks so much for recommending, Preston. An entirely new writer to me. And since I have just taken two weeks off from blogging… I have even more time to read!

  • I adore your book recommendations and will check out Susan Minot. I started ‘A Tree Grows in Brooklyn’ yesterday, as I’ve never read it. My mom recently raved about ‘The Girl with the Louding Voice’, so that has been moved to the top of my (handwritten) to-read list. I just devoured ‘Friends and Strangers’ thanks to your recommendation and absolutely loved it; I have many questions on the epilogue and need answers! ‘The Nickel Boys’ and ‘The Vanishing Half’ are also recent favorites of mine.

  • I, too, have been reading and enjoying short stories during the pandemic. Conversely, I’ve put down a number of novels, by authors I love, unfinished.

  • Susan Minot is one of my favorite authors. I loved Monkeys and Evening. So thrilled she has a new book. Perfect timing! It’s on my must-read list along with Elena Ferrante’s new novel. Thank you!

  • Thank you.
Looks great~ I just ordered it! Short stories are perfect in between book club selections.
