On My Mind

Broaching The Brooch

After bingeing season 4 of The Crown, I’ve had brooches on the brain. HRH wore a spectacular sapphire and diamond beauty yesterday for her 73rd wedding anniversary. My mother gave me a few, but I still haven’t worn them — pinned to my chest is not ideal. However, the three images above have inspired me to play around with them a bit. Miuccia Prada below loves a good brooch and wears them often and well.

Top left Joan Smalls wears Marc Jacobs in W and top right from Vogue Spain.

  • Preston,

I love these ideas – much fresher than pining to the chest.
    Thank you!

  • The sweater shawl brooch looks modern to me.

  • I have a lovely brooch from my mother in law, and love to wear it, with a ribbon laced through the clasp and tied around my neck for more formal occasions. Also pinned to a cloch hat.

  • I gave a simple brooch to each of my bridesmaids (back in 2006!) to wear on a strap of their dress, and to keep; I loved that they had that fun little unexpected flash and momento. I have always wondered how to wear a brooch in my hair; maybe pinned to a headband.

  • Hello Preston, I wear mine all over. Pinned to a handbag, at the wrist of a shirt, over the top button of a blouse, scattered on a jacket or coat, on a belt, and I even pin some of the not so precious ones on my sneakers through the laces at the top. Be fearless. Not much joy just sitting in a drawer.

  • My ten-year-old son is a budding designer (since age 3 he has swooned over velvet and silk!) and he took all of my costume brooches with pearls/crystals and now pins them center of his collar (where a bow tie would sit). Looks fresh on him and much better than on me!

  • Brooches are absolutely fabulous, and I love how they somehow walk the line between grandmotherly charm and Prada cool! Thanks for reminding me to wear more jewelry!

  • I wore one on my black surgical cap ( buttons on the side to save our ears from wearing a mask all day) . It gives the patients something beautiful to see.

  • There a beautiful image of Olivia Palermo wearing two flanking a crew neck that inspired me.
