On My Mind

The Day After

Ironically, I cooked the best Thanksgiving dinner of my life. Every dish, even the turkey, was delicious — go figure. Maybe, since it was just three of us, the pressure was off. My husband put on a jacket (no tie) and my daughter and I pulled out dresses that have not seen the light of day in 10 months. It was very nice.

You’d have to be living under a rock to not know that today is Black Friday. It feels like it started weeks ago, which I think it did. I’m not a big sale shopper, but now that everything is available online I’m going to put on some comfy shoes — these Saint Laurent loafers would be nice (sigh) — and see what’s what. I already upgraded a few kitchen staples from Williams Sonoma that arrived in time to be used for Thanksgiving dinner. To be continued.

  • I had the same experience, everything was delicious! I also tried some new recipes (NYT Cooking, and Food 52) which I would never do in normal circumstances:)

  • I still have my Bass Weejuns – had them resoled by an old world cobbler. Loved them too much to let them go.

  • I find seasonal sale shopping a good time to spring for those things for the home and table top, which are truly investments and that I have been thinking about for a long time, or an important addition to the batterie de cuisine! Among all of the chain stores, Williams Sonoma might be my favorite – the local store feels local. Amidst the glut of stuff available via Amazon, I remain 100% dedicated to calling a store, making friends with an associate who is employed to be of assistance and depends on his/her sales for their professional livelihood, hearing a voice from another state, hearing about their weather or their dogs, discussing the gift wrap options . . . Many have become friends over time ~

  • Oddly enough, my dinner was the best I had ever made also and that was my exact thought. It is amazing how well things turn out when we are relaxed!
