Evening Wear

If I Could, I’d Go Strapless

I have no need for evening clothes this holiday season, but if I did, I’d take a page out of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s style playbook and wear a black, strapless dress, cardigan over my shoulders, a massive cocktail ring, and Manolo mules.

Rick Owens dress, Re/Done cardigan, French Girl lip balm, Dolce & Gabbana dress, Manolo Blahnik mules, Totême dress, Anita Ko ring.

  • I ‘ve been stalking a Givenchy one but don’t have anywhere to wear! Love your posts every morning.

  • I have the ‘perfect’ Givenchy strapless crepe midi dress in my Net a Porter wishlist. It would be a year-round, wear-forever amazing investment piece. We will dress up again, right?

  • I agree about the dress. Those shoes!!!

  • I would never hesitate to buy a fabulous evening wear when it comes along! Fabulous evening wear is rare. Funny story: I once ordered two late day-evening dresses at a trunk show, which I had no immediate need for. Shortly after the showing, however, the company closed, before production. So I immediately called the owner of the shop and asked if she could obtain the samples for me – the exact dresses I had tried on – both of which fit perfectly. To this day they are my best cocktail dresses, and of course I have the pleasure of knowing I’ll never see them on anyone else. : )) I view evening wear as staples in the wardrobe (they certainly never wear out and can be pulled out for years to come.). I also rarely part with evening wear.
Life is much more likely to get better when you have the dress ready and waiting in your closet. I vote buy it.

  • I couldn’t agree more. When you need it, you have a devil of a time finding something and it’s rarely perfect.

  • Preston, I hope you get the D&G dress – it’s so chic with the grey fabric shoe! I fear the exposed back zipper on the other one might look dated too soon. Have fun!

  • 90s minimal forever and ever.

  • Preston, i bought the Toteme dress you pictured here. I was a bit concerned it would be too tent like. But it is perfection. Once again you made a fabulous pic. I plan to style it just as you suggest here.
    Thank you! Merry Christmas

  • Thank you for letting me know. That dress was my favorite of the 3 and actually inspired the post. I will let you know if it suits me.
Merry Christmas to you, as well.
    Warmly,
