Personal Amulets

Even though I am at home 99% of the time, after I make the bed, I put on my watch, tiny diamond hoop earrings, and a ring (or four) — these pieces have become my personal amulets. Weirdly, I’m far more interested in jewelry than ever before. Lovely story from February Vogue UA.

  • Ok, I am doing the same! I look at my watch and earrings on my chest of drawers everyday and finally I am going to wear them.

  • Funny that you should mention this as I have found myself doing the same.

  • Im never without a wristwatch and even though I am home too, putting on my jewelry makes me feel happy!

  • It is such a small, personal pleasure to wear some favourite pieces of jewellery. Everyday, I wear my Cartier watch and earrings whether I am at home or in the office. And lipstick

  • Me too!

  • Same here. Working from home most days and have started opening the jewelry case, sometimes wearing even the major stuff with a cashmere sweater, matching sweatpants and unapologetic Uggs. But always a watch (even the evening ones with a satin band!) and Quelques Fleurs perfume. Life is too short.

  • This post begs the question, who do you dress for? I too, wear my beautiful things, especially jewelry, even when I may be the only seeing me.. Why? Because I dress for me.

  • I don’t wear a watch at home…when I used to go out, it was the first thing that came off when I got home. I am also not wearing my usual wedding rings…but instead a whisper-thin gold band that is almost invisible. I do, however, put on a small pair of hoops every day after I brush my teeth…I don’t look like me in the mirror without earrings!

  • Preston, I’ve been meaning to respond to a prior post about over-purging. Will you consider a class on what to keep and what to purge? Would LOVE LOVE LOVE this.

  • I put on my Cartier watch every morning and two tiny diamond bands, one platinum one gold. I’m going to start to put on my earrings as well! Preston would you offer up your favorite places to get white turtlenecks? And I keep looking for sweater vest but no luck … but I’m not giving up! Thrill of the hunt, and all that, right? Have a lovely day.

  • I love Lands’ End turtlenecks (they run very big) and I’ll keep an eye out for sweater vests. I bought the Cecilie Bahnsen ones late last summer and she may do they again for SS21.

  • Dear Karen, you are right, we dress for ourselves…Of course, we like when others are pleased but mostly for ourselves I truly hope. My Tank Cartier, a wedding band, pearl earrings and H edp are my daily companions.

  • I haven’t changed my jewelry since lockdown. For some reason, I’ve become incredibly attached to what I’m wearing and even sleep in the few items I wear. I did get a Apple watch though, so I can count steps, exercise, laps when swimming, etc. My other watches haven’t been worn except for a few times….

    KathyJanuary 30th, 2021  1:25 PM

  • Thank you, Preston! I ordered a couple of different styles to try. And I’ve got my fingers crossed Cecilie Bahnsen will do the vest again 🙂

  • I love pearls in all forms and am intrigued with the small pearl choker necklace. It’s a beautiful alternative to traditional pearls for every day wear.

  • I wear my 18k yellow David Yurman necklace that my
Mother gave me. I’ve been wearing either my medium
( I have large size too) DY sculpted cable studs or my DY
Constellation studs. Mon -Fri I’ve been wearing a flat ring
By Paloma Picasso for Tiffany .

  • Of course we wear jewelry during the isolation. Along with nice China and silver on a daily basis. And perfume. As Georgie says, life is too short.
All is right with the simple pleasures.
    And, why not?

  • The highlights of my day are deciding what earrings to put on and what dinner to make from the NYT Cooking app. During the pandemic, these small, simple pleasures take on big meaning.

  • About six months ago I put in small hoops, diamond studs and tiny drop hoops with a cross. Haven’t taken them out since. Like Kathy I wear an Apple Watch every day but my most treasured piece is a silver link bracelet. Not to be maudlin but my sister and I had matching ones made in February after my father died and they have a heart charm that has an engraving of the quirky way he used to sign “Dad” in our cards. Will wear it forever.

    SueMJanuary 30th, 2021  8:42 PM

  • The silver link bracelets are a wonderful idea. My mother’s cocktail rings remind me of the endless parties she threw and traveling the world with her teaching me about art and collecting. It was on these trips that she would buy stones to be made into rings. Mother’s cousin owned ruby mines and gifted her many beautiful stones as well.

  • Haven’t been feeling it at all, however this blog and all the comments have inspired me to pull out my dear old and classic Cartier rolling bands and slip them on my finger. And now to shovel snow!

  • Replying to Carey Swan – same here with the home – I have stopped using my usual work Swell bottle and use a crazy pink crystal goblet for water at my home desk. It makes me smile. I find the title ‘personal amulets’ so spot-on. It just feels good to be surrounded by beauty and well-loved items. Interesting to see a lot of Cartier in the comments – is it the romance of it? I am also wearing my tank daily (alternating but both I’ve had for more than 20 years) with a Bulgari green marble and rose gold Bzero ring (from ten years ago). All my old things, but drawn to a thinner ring and am lockdown shopping. Eyeing vintage Cartier or their Entrelacés knot ring.

I’d love to see a Palais cross-post for ‘home amulets’. I treated myself to a beautiful Vitra ergonomic chair after months of bad posture on a dining chair. And fresh flowers in a bud vase, an Artemide desk lamp. Eyeing a pretty bowl for desk snacks, and a Fornasetti incense holder.

  • Thank you for the tip on the Lands’ End turtlenecks. Mine in white and in ivory arrived today and they are perfect!
