On My Mind

It Feels Like La Rentrée

With a first vaccination appointment on my calendar, I’m anticipating that by mid April I will be able to venture out more. It feels a bit like la rentrée, the French term for the transition to the start of the school year. And like the first day of school, I’m excited to finally wear the items I bought in early 2020 (then shelved), and a few new things, too. To quote Miuccia Prada ‘optimism is mounting.’

  • I’ve been wondering about what it will be like when people really are able to start ‘living’ again. I think people will feel like a weight has been lifted, and want to travel and enjoy themselves. I can help but think it will affect their choice of clothes/shoes – light, fun, happy choices!

  • We have a couple more months to go before our lockdown is eased properly in England (outdoor dining, gyms and hairdressers at the very least) but something to look forward to. I spy the Birkins- are you using them again?

    MMSFebruary 27th, 2021  4:44 AM

  • Up until the pandemic, I used the black Birkin all the time. I bought both in 2007 — put my name on the list at Hermès on Madison expecting to wait years and they both came available in a matter of months. A Birkin is a workhorse and as handbags got smaller I started using it more — it’s a tote really. Hermès has overhauled them a bunch of times and they just keep going. For some reason, I rarely grab the gold/camel bag, and it’s the one I’d always had my eye on. I can count the number of handbags I own on two hands, I take care of them and really wear them. The three Céline hobos I bought in 2014 are still my favorites, too. Fortunately, I never seem to tire of the bags I buy.

  • A good way of expressing the feeling in the air right now. I listened to Mrs. Prada and Raf Simons talk after their Fall 2021presentation, it’s time to start thinking about our lives in a post-pandemic world.

  • I love the gold rolling rack where did you buy that?
    Thanks!~

    StephanieFebruary 27th, 2021  8:43 AM

  • On Amazon — they have a number of different styles HERE

    PrestonFebruary 27th, 2021  9:05 AM

  • What are the black clogs? Thanks!

    SharonFebruary 27th, 2021  9:20 AM

  • So the Birkins are 14-years-old, the Chanel 20, and I spy a white Balenciaga dress and Saint Laurent clogs you bought in 2015 (I found those posts). I’m impressed.

    ClaireFebruary 27th, 2021  9:22 AM

  • The black clogs are old Saint Laurent.

    PrestonFebruary 27th, 2021  9:24 AM

  • You are too funny, Claire. There is also a 30-year-old white cotton Chanel skirt, a 25-year-old bouclé Oscar de la Renta skirt, and a camel Lanvin skirt that’s part of a suit circa 2003. They are on this rack because these are my favorite, forever pieces. 🙂

    PrestonFebruary 27th, 2021  9:28 AM

  • Thank you Claire for doing the research lol. Am so happy for you having an appointment, looks like sometime in July for me (mind boggling how bungled our system is) and I’m sure we all feel the same. What a great idea to look at your things this way and imagine the places they’ll go. I am inspired.

  • Mom, I’ll happily take the tan Birkin off your hands

    Georgina DavisFebruary 27th, 2021  10:41 AM

  • I noticed the cute brown Celine hobo has strap adjusted shorter than the others. Do you wear it differently?

PS. Your Amazon link for the rack takes one to the Financial Times. Are they that costly?

    Susan WFebruary 27th, 2021  3:13 PM

  • Hi Preston! Love this! The link to the rolling rack goes to a wallpaper story – would also be interested in rolling rack link. Thank you!

    Kimberly ParkFebruary 27th, 2021  3:28 PM

  • Sorry, here is the link

    PrestonFebruary 27th, 2021  4:28 PM

  • Susan W, I fixed the Amazon link and I wear the Gucci bags both shoulder length and crossbody — they are adjustable.

    PrestonFebruary 27th, 2021  5:01 PM

  • What a gorgeous collection! Do you have a recommendation for wooden hangers? Thank you!

    AbbyFebruary 27th, 2021  5:41 PM

  • In addition to the great observations from others – your rack is proof of “if you love it, buy it in several colors”! One of the ways to develop a uniform, and a signature style. Love it!

  • Love your style and have been searching for the Hermès (not on their site) and the Saint Laurent clogs in black but don’t seem to be available anywhere in a 37 or any size for that matter … any ideas where to find? Thank you Preston.

    DebFebruary 28th, 2021  3:09 PM

  • The Saint Laurent clogs are from 2015. Call an Hermès store and put your name on a list, that may be the best option right now.

    PrestonFebruary 28th, 2021  3:43 PM

  • Thank you for your quick response! Will call the store and was just hopeful the Saint Laurent from 2015 was coming back 🙂

    DebFebruary 28th, 2021  4:17 PM

  • I spot the grey Acne skirt from 2015. Bought it after seeing it here and it is one of my favorites too. Thank you for all the inspiration! Elin

    ElinMarch 1st, 2021  12:22 AM

  • I just had the grey Acne Studios skirt altered, it is a workhorse in my wardrobe. I should list the posts on the pieces shown here: The Toteme black strapless dress, 2 Mackintosh raincoats, Gabriela Hearst midi skirt, 3 ARossGirl dresses, Celine shirt dress, Bottega Veneta trench, Thakoon dress, Celine peacoat, old grey Saint Laurent peacoat that I’ve posted on at least 100 times, a Prada dress that I had to have and wish I’d taken a pass on, the Gucci bag in both brown and black — can’t say I don’t walk the talk 😉
